Sharjah: An Indian killed his wife and four children, the youngest of whom was eight months old, before hanging himself, in one of the most horrific murder-suicides in the country's history, Gulf News learnt last night.
Mohammad Razi, 38, from the south Indian city of Hyderabad, who used to work as an engineer for a Dubai consultancy company, slit the throats of his wife Afshan, 30, and his children Abdul Hamid, 12, Bushra, 11, Umaima, 6, and Sania, 8 months, in their Sharjah industrial area flat near the BMW Roundabout, relatives and police sources told Gulf News.
The gruesome scene was discovered yesterday afternoon when a worried relative told the watchman the family was not answering the door.
He asked the watchman to open the door but he refused, according to one neighbour.
The watchman called the police who discovered the bodies. The police confirmed the crime but refused to provide details.
However, a relative of the family relayed the story that Mohammad had called his father on Thursday in Hyderabad, and told him that he was returning home the next day.
He said things were not going well for him in the UAE and he didn't want to work here any longer.
When the father failed to see his son arrive at the airport he grew worried and called relatives in Sharjah since Mohammad wasn't picking up his phone," the relative said.
The neighbour described the family as "quiet and religious". They regularly went to the nearby mosque for prayers.
The real motive behind the bloody event remains a mystery since police are still investigating.

Mohammad Raziuddin, who was found dead along with his four children and wife in his Sharjah flat, had shown suicidal tendencies, according to his close friends.
Raziuddin, a civil engineer from the south Indian city of Hyderabad, his wife Afshana, and their children Badar Anjum, known as Bushra, 11, Mohammad Hamiduddin, 8, Umaima Taysir, 6, and Sania, aged one-and-a-half years, were found with their throats slit in their apartment, police said.
One of his friends said once, during his college days, Razi was under some pressure and got a bit frustrated.
He wanted to end his life, but he got over that stage after he was comforted by friends. Razi's friend did not divulge any further details.
He added Razi had also shown some frustration at work some years ago and his workload was subsequently reduced.
Gulf News yesterday talked to neighbours, shopkeepers and the imam of the local mosque who were all shocked at the news.
His neighbours said Razi apparently had no financial problems.
"They were a well off family and very religious. We hardly saw his wife go out the house," one neighbour said.
Another neighbour, who was a close friend of Razi's wife, said: "She was a housewife and never complained about anything." The family had lived in the building for the last five years.
"Their children were well-mannered and used to play with our children," said another neighbour.
"He used to come for Friday prayers before the sermon started. He also used to come for 'dars' [religious lectures], which we offered twice a week after Isha prayers at the mosque," said Farqan, Imam of the mosque near his house.
He adding everyone in the mosque was shocked to hear about the tragedy.
"I often saw him with his son in the mosque even for Fajr (early morning) prayers," said a car mechanic who has a shop nearby.
The watchman of the building said: "His children played cricket in the backyard of the building. He never got angry or picked fights with anyone. I can't believe he finished his life. I am shocked."
A salesman at the building's grocery shop said: "Razi never had things on credit unlike many other tenants. We always found him soft-spoken and kind."
A cashier at a restaurant in the same building said: "He sometimes had a cup of tea on his way to his prayers in the mosque," he said.
Razi's employer Mohammad Shaikh Mubarak of Mubarak Consultancy said everyone at the company was shocked. He worked as a senior engineer.
"We called him up when he did not turn up for work. We heard about the tragic incident the same evening. Most of us went to Sharjah but the police had cordoned off the flat and did not allow anyone to see the bodies. It is unbelievable."
Mathew his secretary said: "Someone called the office and told us about his death. He was a very kind and friendly person."
Indian Consul General Yash Sinha said: "We are trying to get in touch with the police and the company where Razi worked. People from the Indian Association, Sharjah, are also trying to trace the family's relatives. The only way to get background information is through them," he said.

Deal With Reality or Reality Will Deal With You
I too was disturbed when I read it first in Gulf news...The work pressure in the ME is too much for some to handle, but I am totally speechless the way he killed his family.
He is not the only one, somedays back one Call center lady killed her daugther aged 6 in the BEST bus in bombay fearing job loss.
yes it was very sad to here this news.
This is not the first case in UAE, with in last six months few working labourers Suicide, becuse of non payment of salaries and working conditions in UAE.I think UAE Govt should control local companies for providing better working condition to expat labour.
