yeah, we went to the police yesterday, but they said that since we donot have any papers (lease agreement, etc.) nothing can be done, and the owner of the house has the right to ask us to vacate after giving us one month notice. (However, we do pay the rent via cheque).

Even in my present condition, nothing can be done.....that's what they said. So much of Canada and its human rights...........:(
I guess we would have been supported by the authorities if we were in India.
dont know what to do really.....to be very frank, we have started regretting our decision to come here.......and I will recommend everyone not to come here if you donot have close relatives to fall back upon during days like this......

Consider calling police. Basically you are not complaining about the landloard but asking the police to help you so that you do not have to move out during the most difficult period, so no complain about landloard. Just call them, explain the situation and they should be able to guide you. They might also tell the landloard to wait for few more months.

Hi Nup

My wife has told me about all the post regarding you and your lanlord

my suggestions

1. Go to you local MP and tell him everything..
2. The police says that u do not have any documents for lease. OK try going to some other police station and show them your telephone bill or bank ststement with address or anything which proves that this is your mailig address.
3. Complaint to the city of brampton that the lanlord is not declaring income from the rent you pay. You have proof as you pay by cheque.
4. Don't worry and don't be scared of whatever she says.
5. Call a good news channel and tell them the whole story

this is just my suggestion but please make the best decision you feel.

let me know if I can help in any way.

Thanks

I don't disagree with your points, but if you sit back for a minute (or two) and think, what will she gain with all of this. Considering the fact that she's recently had a baby, I don't think it's advisable to hang around at that place for too long with a sword hanging on your head.

Is is just to prove to the landlord that what is being done is not right.

The right thing to do would probably be to take the landlord to task somehow. Either complain or file a lawsuit or whatever...

Is that the smart thing to do though? No, not in your condition. Why don't you guys just move? From a place like this, the sooner the better. If you look around in your neighborhood, I'm sure there'll be many others renting out basements. There's dozens of ads on CanadianDesi classifieds. OR you can get help or advice from either Amit or Rajeev on the forum. In fact, why not follow Amit's suggestion below?

If the move itself is a big concern and you have a lot of stuff, maybe some cd's can help.

Nupur,

Why do not you just walk away from a basement apartment?

There can be many reasons to take this step: clean air, proper ventilation, noise, attitude of your landlord etc. You seem to be worried about your baby's health as you are in advanced stage of pregnancy.

If the budget is your concern, why do not you consider the new Daniel's stack townhouses on Mavis/Eglinton? They are small in size but very independent and adeqaute for 2 adults and a baby. They rent out anything from $900-950 pm and it can cost you another $60 for hydro.

Let me know and if you want me to send you more details.

As far as the law is concerned, you are protected under TPA and you can take necessary steps to claim your rights.

Is it worth for you to stress out at this time?

Hi Nupur,

I have already volunteered before, and offering again, if you need help with moving, I can come along and get some more CDs with me if there are too many items to move. It is not a great time to move, but the looking at the stress you will be facing sitting there, it is advisable to move out asap.

Please send me a PM or just reply on this post with your contact number, we will set something up.

Hiren

Hi All,

Thanks for the help that we received from all of you. A few days back, I gave birth to a baby daughter :D :D :D :D, and have named her Saheli. She is doing well, but the only problem is that she has rejected breast milk, so we are feeding her with artificial milk. Maybe this problem will also get sorted out very soon.

Thanks again

Dear All,

I was under the impression that the landlord will be sympathetic towards my cause. I did buy a room heater and was mentally prepared to move out soon after my delivery, but most probably the landlord was waiting for this moment, and today she asked me to move out by the end of Feb, knowing fully well that my delivery due date is late Feb.
This is nothing but deliberate harrasment. She is a Pakistani lady and is well known in the Pakistani circle (she sells RRSP). I did ask her to reconsider her decision so that I can move out by end of March, but she didnt relent.
Since this is our first baby, we have enough tensions/worries, and now we have to search for another accomodation etc.
Should I report this to the authorities? Can anyone help me?

Thank You

Nupur:cry:

Hello,

The house where we live is located in Mississauga, and the house owner is going out of the way to see that there is no adequate heating in the house. Although, by local municipal law, the heating should be 20 degrees throughout the day, he lowers the temp to 14-15 degrees during the day time and increases to 18 degrees during the nighttime. However, sometimes during the early morning hours, he simply switches it off, and we wake up shivering and with a heavy head. Repeated requests have made no impact. He says this is the best that he can do.
I am in my advanced pregnancy and am worried that this might have an adverse effect on me & my baby's health. Moving out to another acco is difficult at this stage, so what should I do?
Should I complain to the police & the Housing tribunal? Will that help? Will that lead to more harassment by the landlord, and subsequent eviction?
Please help me with suggestions/advice.

Thanks
Nupur

Congratulations on the birth of a Baby girl.
We wish you all the very best.
An off topic Question :
Were you on epidural during birth and did they give you more pain killers after delivery. Why i am asking is that , the same thing happened with my wife and due to the pain killer in the blood/breast milk , the child rejected feeding on breast milk. Even though we had written that Breast feeding is the most important to us, none of the post delivery nurses seemed to even care. They forced my wife to formula feed and there was no lactation consultant to help (since it was night time and anyway the lactation consultant can be met only with prior appointment). After that , the baby formula feeds only.
This could be another bungled up medical care in Canada.
Anyways, i need your views on this.
