I was checking the so-called high-speed internet availability in Toronto and it made me laugh for the speed and price. I think in Singapore you can get 6MBPS true-broadband, truly unlimited usage/connection time for far less than whats on offer here.

Cheers!

Hi Rajcanada,

This is where I picked up the unlimited upload/download issue...usage=download??? I dont know how ISPs bill usage.

Laksa is talking about ISP in singapore and did not name any ISP he/she is comparing with in Canada.

But again, nobody said that Rogers or Bell has no download limit or it is unlimited.

Mine was more of a blanket statement for the whole world :D

Rajcanada is right. I did not mention any names when comparing the prices with Singapore ISP. The situation in Singapore is this:

The usage is truly unlimited. That is you can stay connected 24/365 (as long as you have paid your bills) and there is NO cap on upload/download. In addition to this seemingly unlimited usage, you also get a digital voice (telephone) line for free, with free unlimited local calls (and access to discounted call rates). All in all, very good value for money.

My research for GTA was limited to Rogers and Bell. The prices did seem high for the caps on usage, upload-download limits, no freebees and ofcourse the speed.

In UK "unlimited" meant you could stay connected at a time for a max of 4hrs. At the end of that, the system would disconnect you and reconnect. This they said, was to prevent people from using the connectivity for commercial use. I do not recall pricing structure, the speed of upload-download limits as it was the early days of broadband introduction in the UK then (3 years back).

Perhaps the Canadians are a complaisant lot?? (no offence intended).

By the way people, would anyone please care to answer my query in "moving soon" forum (arriving in Toronto in Feb). Thanks.

You get to stay connected 24/365 with the plans in Canada from Rogers / Bell too, nothing great about that!

I’m a Rogers subscriber and download / upload caps are relatively recent. That being said, the combined download / upload cap is about 60GB per month (there are no individual caps contrary to what someone suggested on a post above).

Do you actually use more than 60GB / month for the cap to be relevant?! I monitor my usage online (rogers provides a daily analysis of usage), and do not exceed 2 – 3 GB per month – and I’m certainly not tech challenged!

BTW, a telephone (VOIP) line is available in Toronto for about $20/month – service that includes the obvious caller id, voice mail, voice messages over email and whatever else that seems to get you all so excited. Local calls are also free and yes, long distance is at discounted rates. Relatively speaking, in a place like Toronto, 20 bucks is loose change.

?? Rajcanada just did a conversion that showed you the actual prices for service were comparable. How then do you say that the prices ‘seem high’?

Perhaps you should learn to spell words before you venture out to use them!

I certainly touched a raw nerve with crenshaw! I do not need to demonstrate my linguistic abilities on this or (any) forum and certainly not to challanged souls like crenshaw. However for his benefit, I am pasting a link below for the "meaning" of the word:

http://www.wordreference.com/definition/complaisant
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/complaisant

My intention in starting this thread (of which ISP was only a part) was just to get some basic information which I could not get through other websites. If some of you did not like my comments or my interpretation of some of the info, then I am sorry as I had no intention of hurting anyone's feelings. However, I am entitled to my views and shall maintain them where they are based on facts.

Without going into details of the technology offered by Starhub, etc I guess it is time to close this thread now as no useful information is being exchanged. BM, please note.

Merry Christmas to you all.

I think you just demonstrated them. BTW, just so you know, the word you intended above would be 'challenged', not 'challanged'.

.......and how do you say that Canadians are 'complaisant' (rather than 'complacent', which you probably meant).

Well, that's what we're trying to tell you.........they aren't based on facts, you aren't able to refute that so you chicken out.......:D
