http://www.guardian.co.uk/india/story/0,12559,1682102,00.html

This story is on the 'home' page of CD today.

The author states that in homes where women are better education, and have had a daughter, it is less likely their second or subsequent child will be a girl. It suggests that better educated women are more likely to access ultrasounds and scans to determine the sex of the child and abort it due to pressure from family etc.

Any thoughts?
Why would educated women do this? What is the slant the article is trying to portray?

It is a shame that many educated people do it. I wouldn't blame it on the woman alone. The pressure is from the family members & the desire for the male child to carry on the family name further.

What people don't realise is that in today's world the girls also take equal care of their parents. What is really important is how good a human being your kid turns out to be, whether it is a boy or a girl. What use is a boy if he wastes his time idling around?

Thanks & rgds.

Rajan.

IMO, education plays very little part here. Decisions are not made by the "educated" women alone. There are others such as in-laws (out laws?), parents, husband, etc. Include friends (if they are in the rat race). Indian society has a long way to go. Having cell phones and computer, wearing tight jeans and short Vneck Tshirts does not change society fast.

I agree. Those are material comforts. Unfortunately they are seen as a sign of 'advancement'.

However, wouldnt an \"educated\" women..be more independant..likely to stand up against her parents, inlaws etc? If one develops critical thinking skills through post secondary studies..wouldnt they have studied/learnt about the fallacies of long held traditions/beliefs ie/ that boy babies are better than girls etc?

Of course you could debate what \"educated\" really means.

It is obvious that this evil issue is nothing but Male Chauvinisium. Unless we understand this aspect of our culture and are prepared to change it over time than we will rid of this problem.

We have many good rituals in our culture and a few dumb ones, eg are Dowary ("moore";), excessive Jewellery hoarding, the issue at hand and a few others.

I am allow to have an opinion and please read this with an open mind.

Evil issue.. do you mean gender selection?
yes it is a societal bias towards males. Its also difficult to change it because its so rooted in society. There have been practical aspects to having male children for some Ie/ helping out in the family farm etc. However what is the need for this in cities/towns where families tend to be smaller and often nuclear?

Why do you say excessive jewellery hoarding. plz explain?
thanks.

I think u answered your own question.
Critical thinking skills through post secondary studies? Wow! If that were to happen in India to the educated folks, then India would have pushed aside USA and other developed countries. "Somehow get a degree in the field that gets you a job" is very different from critical thinking.
