Since I am moving back to India, what about taking desktop computer with me? Is there any duty applicable? Should we have a separate box for it or put it in the bag?

Rgds.

Rajan,
SInce you are going to India for Good, you are eligible to claim Transfer of residence (Where you promise that you will not leave india for a year. if it so happens that you do travel, then you need to pay back the amount that was waived off as tax in the customs when you came to India).
I donot think that the Customs officer will trouble you for a desk top, but if he does you have to say that you need Transfer of Residence previlage. This will entail you to less tax and more excemption limit. I am not sure of the exact specifics but other CD's may be able to help you.

There are some books published which explain customs rules. The one I am thinking of is by Nabhi (I think). In any case, it might be worthwhile asking someone here in India to mail that to you.

I bought one myself to find out about laptops.

Hi!
I dont think that thes days customs hassles you much though it might differ from case to case . But from my perosnal experience of traveling fro last 14 years they are much easier now . Just dont worry and carry your laptop with u in cabin luggage to ensure that it does not break in transit.
Cheers

Hi,

I believe you are planning to take desktop with you, will you buy a converter with that 110-220 v,and if yes then are you planning to buy from here or from India...?

What other electronics are you taking with you ,becoz they are very cheap if you compare with India...

thx!

Most computers now come with power supplies for both voltages. There is a switch setting which needs to be changed.

So I don't need to buy anything. I will need a separate power cord in India though.

Are laptops cheaper in Canada or Singapore? Chandresh, you might know. Can you recommend a reliable shop in Singapore?

Rgds.

Hi Rajand,

In India good laptops are around Rs.45,000 to Rs.50,000 with one year warranty. Buy form Singapore only if you get a great bargain. Compaq/HCL/HP/Zenith desktops range from Rs.20,000 to Rs.40,000 depending on specs.

No one bothers about laptop on airport. You can carry one free of duty for you own use. DO NOT BOOK IT IN CHECK-IN BAGGAGE! Chances of damage/loss are very high.

On transfer of residence bringing in old used desktop is no issue. Just carry its receipt, just in case.

:)
