My wife had fever over the last 2 days & since it was the long weekend, the doctor was not available which is undertstandable.

Today when we called in the morning for getting appointment, the receptionist said that she can give an appointment for next Monday (after a week). Ofcourse I gave her a piece of my mind & refused the appointment.

I simply do not undertstand how the health care system works here.

Rgds.

I thought this problem existed mostly in the Toronto area because of the state of health care in ON.
Are you saying that the situation is similar in AB?

It comes across as pretty stupid sometimes. Your family doctor however should give you an appt. sooner. If not with your doctor, than some other doctor in the clinic (usually they have more than one doc. here in Toronto).

My personal experiences haven't been that bad, however there's no question that the system is jammed and needs to be fixed. If partial privatisation is the way to go, let's do it. Let's see what the Tories can do about this..

Uptil now, I have been getting appointments on the same day. But today was something totally unexpected. The doctor is from India & has been really good to us, even giving us free antibiotic medicines for my kids. He is the only doctor in his clinic.

Infact in the last one month in Calgary, there have been articles & photos in newspapers of patients being treated & having to sleep in the hospitals in hallways for 4-5 days.

Rgds.

So what happens when a family doctor does not see you at the soonest? Can we go to a walk-in clinic?

Yes you can go to walk-in clinic or you can go to hospital's emergency department if after hours or if the problem is severe.

There was only one family doctor in Kitchener-Waterloo area who was accepting new patients couple of months ago.

Two case studies for perusal which happened to my colleagues who live in Brampton recently.

1.The wife of a colleague of mine, felt giddy suddenly and blacked out and fell down in the kitchen. Luckily for her it was holidays and it happened around 3.30 PM. One of the daughters called 911, and the whole crew of fire trucks, ambulance, police cars arrived at home. After which the ambulance persons did some check on her and by the time she had regained consciousness and they said she had a bout of low BP and was rushed to the Emergency of a local hospital at around 4.30PM. The doctors said it would take her about 1 hour to see her in the emergency. By the time many other accident cases started arriving and they waited at the emergency till 6.30PM, when the doctor came out they were informed that the doctor could see them only by 9.00PM as more demanding cases were on the \"Q\". They both left in a huff and went home at 7.00PM.

2.The father of a friend of mine was complaining of pain in the upper abdomen/stomach and was looking pale and was full of discomfort. They went to their local family doctor, who prescribed Tylenol and sent them home. The pain persisted. They were refered to gastroenterologist and when they met him he wanted a CAT scan, which took 2 days; and then he suggested a MRI scan and that took another 3 days(lucky the typical wait time is 2 to 3 months). The problem was not found and the person was still in pain and only on Tylenol. My friend forced the doctors to admit his dad in the hospital which they reluctanly did. By the time one week had passed. Now they said they wanted to do endoscopy and a they put a endoscope and found that it could not enter passage of the liver. They said that now it could either a stone or a cancerous growth in the liver. They wanted to a biospy and that took 3 days. The doctors want to discharge this gentleman home, while the results of CAT, MRI and biopsy are awaited. The reason being that the results have to be analyzed and then some one has to enter the data into the computer and there is an overload of cases to be entered.Today the case had entered the 3rd week without any identification of the problem and incidentally the specialist doctor is going out of town and would be back only next wednesday and then he would be able to go further. That is a cool 1 month since the problem started.

I suggested to my friend to send his father to India. He could spend around $6000 on full medical treatment in good hospital with a roundtrip ticket of about $1750. He would get treated fast, get the operation done if required and also have a vacation with his family and come back rested.

The only thing I can say after these case studies is \"Oh! Canada.......\"

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
