From Canada to Kerala to meet their mother

Kochi, March. 1 (PTI): It was a warm home-coming for two Canadian sisters who travelled all the way to Kerala to meet their biological mother and brother after nearly 30 years.

For their 67-year-old mother Annamma, all her prayers to see her two daughters were fulfilled.

Annamma and her son Benny and his wife came to Kochi airport to receive the sisters when they arrived today.

The two sisters -- Rosy and Ammini -- had been adopted by a Canadian family from an orphanage at nearby Kalady about 30 years ago.

The sisters live in Montreal east and speak only French.

They had contacted the Quebec Malayali Association seeking some information about their mother.

The Association's former President, Mathew Mundiyamkal, who along with some other Keralites flew down with the two sisters, told PTI that they had traced Annamma with the help of a birthday photograph.

The association contacted people in Kerala and through great difficulty could gather information that Rosy and Ammini hailed from Kokkamangal in Alapuzha district.

Rosy's husband, who is working in the French newspaper \"La Presse\", accompanied them.

After her husband's death at Chennai, Annamma and her four children moved to Kerala. She was finding it difficult to make two ends meet despite working in houses as a maid and later left for Chertala to became a coir worker.

Annamma said poverty forced her to send her four children to an orphanage at Kalady in Ernakulam and from there her two daughters were adopted by a Canadian couple when Rosy was 10 years old and Ammini 8.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
