If Gandhi is in Canada would he have gone for Candian citizenship? I am just pointing Gandhi here as the name comes quickly to my mind. If any freedom fighter is in Canda would he have gone for his citizenship and be loyal to her majesty.
I think Gandhi's relatives are in East coast and not sure whether they are naturalized americans..

I am taking citizenship oath tomorrow
Hello!
I am taking my citizenship oath tomorrow at 11:00 am. This thread has invoked my feeling of patriotism in me. Till now , i have not made up my mind if i should say the oath or not. I am not comfortable in owning my loyality to the Queen, a mere mortal. I will decide by tonight the solution.
if any of you have any tips , please share.
TK
sidenote: I will surely take the citizenship. I feel that it is the bonus that Canada gives immigrants who have slooged in this cold country in labour jobs for 4 years, paying taxes and living a down trodden life in Canada. The only thing that i am not sure is about the oath. Should i or not pledge my alliance/ loyalty to a mere mortal in this age where everyone is equal. I have never been born a slave and never will be a slave. I feel that the oath is a discrimination. Canada thus stands in line with Saudi Arabia which is owned by a king and his sucessors and where democracy is not allowed.
Sidenote 2 :Please note that i will not be cursing the Queen. I also donot approve the related statement found in the below mentioned post. I respect the Queen as a ruler of a sovereign country. What i said was that i donot like/ approve/ consider it ethical to take an oath in the name of the Queen and her sucessors, mere mortals.

what did Gandhi do. Just extended the time for India getting it's freedom, by preaching non-voilence. If these things had been left in hands of Chandrashekar, Bhagat Singh etc, we would have got it way before.

what did Gandhi do, by extending the time, getting more innocent killed in name of Non-Voilence, which I never understood where he got from because whether Jainism or Hinduism they both preach non-voilence, but they never that voilence for a just cause is wrong. And if attaining freedom is a wrong cause, what further can I say about these ppl.

What did Gandhi and Nehru do, made India and Pakistan.

What is there to hate about this country. I find it to be the same as my motherland whom I still treasure. It like my motherland, has mountains, lakes, sand, rivers, beaches, animals, trees and humans. What you don't like are some stupid individuals. But then where on earth you don't find them.

It's us humans who have created India, Canada, USA otherwise the Earth is Earth. Learn to appreciate it. Hate the ppl. if you really want to (though I don't really justify that too because as I said idiots will be found everywhere) Remember V.P Singh and Mandal commission.

I would like to share my feelings with dinesh C, TK, nand and many others. I just finished watching Rang De Basanti on DVD a few minutes ago. The mere thought of many of the brave heroes of India have fought to obtain the freedom we are breathing now and how I'm going to just give it up for a few Dollars and a Passport during the Citizenship Oath.

My resolution is to think about and sing in my mind a nice Bharathiar song like \" Achamillai ! Achamillai !\" during the oath. I feel that I can do more to my country by pumping my dollars back to it and helping it in times of need like Tsunami/Earthquakes. I can also help my country by obtaining my citizenship here and trying to shape foreign policy of USA and Canada to be more favorable to my mother country India.

My citizenship is another 217 days later, but my mind has got swayed by this beautiful movie called Rang De Basanti.

Mera Bharat Mahaan !

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

You were wrong. A non-violent Gandhi was insipration to Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Junior.

If armed struggle would produce better results, look at Palestine and it's suicide bombers. It didn't produce the desired result besides making the world more sympathetic towards Israel.

India being a democracy has all the valves to reduce the pressures in a social system that practices caste based divisions - a small upper caste elite enjoying the most of the wealth while a large lower caste never recieved it's rightful place before independence.

While I hate reservations based on caste, I feel they were the prime reason India never went into civil war because they guranteed the rights to a majority people who were oppressed in the name of caste.

Unfortunately the reservations acheived their objective to a lot extent and now it is better to reduce them slowly. I will never forget the self-immolation of more than 220 poor young people from upper caste during Mandal commission protests.

The reason I left India is I see no more future in India for my kids as everything is based on reservations.

Mahatma Gandhi's life achievement stands unique in political history. We may all be happy and grateful that destiny gifted us with such an enlightened human being, a role model for the generations to come.

For info about Mahatma Gandhi & books written about & by him, visit the website http://www.mahatma.org.in" rel="nofollow">LINK

The website is the brain-child of Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. I was fortunate to be associated with this project since my company had the contract for the conversion of books into HTML format in India.

Rgds.

I would like to put it slightly differently.

When one becomes citizen of an adopted country it is ethical to take proper oath. Allegiance to Queen is not allegiance to a mortal person, it is allegiance to the way constitution of Canada is currently framed. It may change in future or it may not.

When one thinks about motherland, where one was born, not every son can do everything. If one son can contribute while working in the country, and other son can contribute from afar, the composite whole will be more than sum of parts.

Being grateful to Canada does not necessarily mean being disloyal to India and vice versa. Today China's diaspora / expatriate population is biggest investor in China, making its economy boom.

Everyone has to reach such a level that he can contribute to the economy of Canada and the economy of India. Being in Canada and becoming a citizen is just a step in that direction of personal growth and there is nothing wrong about it. You cannot help any of the country till you are strong and productive.

:)

Very well said. As much as I am in disagreement with pledging allegiance to the Queen and not the Cdn Flag, I would still say the oath in its proper form. As future citizens, we can all work to maybe change the pledge.
