I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
I had been to both Komala's and Sarvana bhavan.
Komala's is very clean but the interior is like you visiting in any company canteen in India. you pay first get the invoice be seated and wait for yr turn. even most of the items in menu is not available all the time, The taste is ok compared to prices, It would be little better if the cashier smile once a while..
Sarvanabhavan is not a good experience at all, I ordered a rava masala dosa and the received the dosa in pieces after waiting for a while, looking at the service level I didn't bother bringing to their attention, finished it and decided not to visit again.
instead try visiting Nilgiri's it's a real small place but food is better than these two restaurant. It's located on Markham Steel, (south of steeles in a plaza)
I think it is wrong to compare Komalas with any regular Indian restaurent - whether fine dining or normal.
Komalas is a Singapore chain and an extremely popular one at that. The original restaurent was a typical South Indian Dhaba style outfit, where food is served very fast and all the waiters remember your order without writing it on a piece of paper. Like any Dhaba, you are not expected to sit there and relax, but have your food and move. This original restaurent has been there for more than 30 years and still going strong.
The son of the original Dhaba owner came up with the idea of serving Indian food in McDonalds or Burger King style - and if you see it closely, it operates exactly in the same manner. The customer orders at cash, and the info is transmitted to the kitchen. The only difference is that at Mac, you stand at the cash till the food is served to you while in Komalas, you collect your receipt and move to the service counter and collect your food. All the items have their own defined plates and cups and mugs and they all have the logo of the company.
In short, it is Indian style McDonalds - so if this is a canteen, so is McDonalds, or Wendy's or BK or Kentuky.......The concept is fast food - Indian basically.
I used to love Komala's food in Singapore.......however, I did not find it as tasty here. And yes the prices when compared to Singapore, are quite high I agree. However, it is a very neat and clean Dhaba, just like these international fast food chains and I am sure, it will continue to do so (atleast in Singapore it remains neat and clean still, after so many years) But I am sure this will do very well here, specially if opened in an office area (the present one is in a strip plaza) or busy places like beach, or food court.

Advice is free – lessons I charge for!!
I visited their Scarborough, Canada location for dinner today (March 15, 2006). I ordered Pav Bhaji, Chat Papdi & Sweet Lassi.
The service was good, the restaurant was clean, but the food was mediocre at best.
The main complaint I have is the quantity is too small and you leave hungry.
I spent $13.00 and was still hungry, needless to say I will never visit again, when I can go to several local Indian restaurants; spend half the amount for food that is great.
If they plan to survive and expand, they need to do two things
1) Increase your food quantity
2) Visit your pricing strategy
Good Luck.
Komala's looked too good to be an Indian canteen! But if the target was to create something like an Indian MacDonalds, then they have failed miserably.
My experience was similar to many here. The food was bland and portion size was small.
Finally I think the set up at the Scarb location is completely wrong. You enter the store and on the left you place your order. Then you walk over to the counter passing chair and tables with patrons already trying to enjoy their meal.
