This has to be one of the toughest (I know there's a poll open on this) thing to do here in Canada. In India, my Uncle was a doctor so we never had this issue. But here, its impossible to find a good doctor, especially a doctor of Indian origin who's taking new patients.

If you go to a gora, all he/she does is write a prescription. At least that's been my experience so far. They don't attempt to analyze the problem or anything, they just want to get rid of you as fast as possible with a prescription a make their money.

Someone told me recently that the reason doctors don't take more patients here is that after they reach a cap of $300000, they don't get paid by the government if they see patients. So even if they have time, they will not take any more patients. I think that's shameful, I would at least like to hold the medical profession to a higher standard.

Please write your thoughts / opinions about this. Also, if anybody knows a good doctor in the Miss. / brampton area who's accepting new patients, please let me know, I'm looking for one.

Finding good doctor in Canada is really difficult. Here medical system is so strange, that for us who are coming from India, are often have strange feelings about it.

I personally don't have any major problems with doctors, except one. Interestingly that doctor is desi.

He is so horrible that sometimes I don't understand why people are going there. Taking four hours after giving you an appointment, giving you vaccines and injections without taking your permission, calling you to his office just to tell you that your reports are normal, calling patients more often than usual, asking for more tests every time etc. etc. My wife was going there and once I went myself and I fired him in front of other people. After than I transfered my wife's file to another doctor (of Chinese origin). He is very nice doctor.

The hospitals are strange, and in case of emergency their behavior is strange. Doctor is going to see you after 5 hours!! When are you going to be operated? No one is going to tell you.

For gynecology problems - only physicians are going to look after you, and you cannot go to gunk before seven months. This is wrong and I know at five cases of missing just because of ignorance of physicians.

Strange! Strange! Strange!

I never thought that the nursing care is Canada is so bad. The 3-part story in Toronto Star was really shocking.

Are we living in a G7 country?

wow, Toronto has changed. My wife and me had very good liuck when we were in TO 5 yrs ago. Our family dr was a dr.Cook(female) at Etobicoke(close to subway). Very nice doctor. We had our first child at Queensway and a pleasant experience there too. So Gynacs, pedaitricians and family docs...all good experiences only.

Our luck has followed us to Montreal where we had our second child 2 yrs ago. Had a cpl of visits to the Emergency (childrens hospital). Once when my son was 3 months old. He was admitted in within the hour . Actually, another time my daughter was complaining of stomach pain and the triage ascertained that she could wait. They normally give higher priority to the more severe cases. Anyway at that time I was in the waitingroom for 12 hrs. I did not mind since I knew that there were kids who needed the immediate attention more than my daughter did. Finally my daughter decided she was well enough to go home :) without seeing the doctor.

This summer I dislocated/minor fractured my left elbow, roller-blading, and was sent home with xray/cast and all within 5 hrs...this on a sunday when I had to go to the crowded hospital emergency. Also had to visit the physio for about 10 sessions after and that went by without any hassles too. Arms normal now though I did manage to screw up my summer, single-handedly (pun intended)
I have heard of horror stories from others though.

However, one tip that my wife and me have always followed was to choose your doctors via recommendations of people you know. Also let the doctor/ receptionist know that a current client recommended you. Helps you get on the doctors list easier.
