I have had a lot of horror stories by people living in owner occupied buildings. Some of them are :
1. Will not heat the rooms properly. if we put on the cooking range/ oven for heat , then they will complain or ask us to pay extra charge.
2. Will not allow scratching on the walls with crayons (esp. for people with babies)
3. all fixtures and appliances are at the tenants risk. If water is leaking you need to call a plumber to fix it at your own cost.
4. will not allow friends/ relatives to stay for extended period of time.
5. Every time, you see them outside, they will complain of something.
Just what i heard from people. Maynot be true for every house owner/ tenant.
TK
Sidenote: I will never stay in owner owned places.

you've been with some really friendly desis lol. Let me add :

1.
landlord: "it's a beautiful weather today, the clothes will dry so much nicer, it is sunny"

2.
me:while I am taking clothes out of the dryer, my first dryclean in 2 weeks !
lanlord:"are these your clothes ?"
me: No they are my neighbors !!
lanlord:"you know if you use the dryer its put under alot of load"
me: it's not me sitting on the dryer !!

3.
landlord "Why don't you use the steamer to make tea"
me: "but i like steeped tea"
landlord " Oh no this is much better ! "

list goes on ..

So how does one find a month by month basement apt NOT owned by a desi family?

I'm about to be in the same situation myself and mostly desi ads on the classified with all sorts of conditions - vegetarian, non-drinker, hindu, purple complexion!

Are there other papers/classifieds where one can find this? I will search here as well to see what I can get.

What's your budget?

There is a free rental guide you can pick up from most supermarkets (I know there's a shelf outside of most Dominion's). This has a pretty extensive list of rentals.

You can call up individual buildings for sub-lets. That's what I did when I moved to Mississauga. Got a 5 mo. month to month lease right away, which worked out great because I didn't really have a job at that time and wanted to keep my options open. Fortunately, I found a job in Mississauga and decided to stay back because the building was great and very well maintained.

The only thing they did not do for me because of the m to m lease is they didn't paint the apt. for me before I moved in. Which was fine because the apt. was in pretty decent condition and I had the option to paint myself if I wanted to.

The condo I had moved into has the option for owners to contract the rental management part to the building mgmt. And it works out great for renters because you don't have to deal with individuals.

Thanks for the sublet tip. It never occurred to me.

I want an apt for only 2-3 months till I figure out where exactly I want to lease closer to downtown. At the moment I'm ok with a longer commute to my office downtown, but I'd like to get a 1 bedroom within 750. I know the figure is quite low and I'm not sure if I can find an apt within that range. OTOH, I can see plenty of basement apts for that figure.
