World Bank released a list of richest nations of the world today. The top three richest nations were US, Japan and Germany. China was fourth.

Canada came in 9th with a GDP of $1.115 trillion and India came in 12th with a GDP of $785.47 Billion. I am sure it's not going to be long before India becomes richer then Canada! As of today, India is already richer then Australia.

The article is a bit misleading as they have not given per capita GDP figures. If a population of 1 billion produce worth of $785 each, they will have a GDP of $785 billion. Australia has a much smaller population.
See http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-countries-by-gdp-ppp-per-capita

Australia is 8th, India is 122nd in terms of per capita GDP in international dollars.

Edit: The article has been written by somebody in PTI and now many national dailies carry it.

I wonder what triggered this article in July........these numbers have been available since April! Perhaps a columnist with no other topic for the day?

The column suggests that the numbers are PPP adjusted. That's not the case, with PPP adjustments, India should be 4th http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28PPP%29

On the other hand, comparing absolute numbers for a country with a population of 1 billion with the absolute numbers for a country with a population of 30 million on a measure of income, reflects the OP's understanding of what he posted anyway :D

See the World Bank Link (Based on total GDP not adjusted for PPP) http://siteresources.worldbank.org/DATASTATISTICS/Resources/GDP.pdf

Date of the World Bank data is July 1, 2006 & probably released last week only.

News item is ofcourse misleading (also published in TOI http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1717334.cms

Have you heard of the old proverb \" There are three kinds of lies...... lies, damned lies and statistics\". From the beginning of time, it has been very convenient to hide behind twisted figures, called statistics.

And now this great desi-videshi debate about how India is richer than Canada. Instead of stirring up a hornet's nest about my views, I will accept this as true................ So what? Does that make India superior, or Canada inferior?

I think these stories are meant to fill up columns in newspapers (I have been with the media for a long time, & I know how it works.......So Bhaiyon and behenon, don't get carried away with all those figures. Rather it would help if you use this forum to help each other out.

Is there anyone who disagrees with me?
