My study permit and temporary resident visa expire on 31 August 2006. I have been issued a year-long work permit recently, however was really surprised to find out from CIC that should I visit India after 31st Aug 2006, I will have to apply for the entry visa (temporary resident visa) again to return to work in Canada. The fact that my work permit would still be valid at the time, would have no bearing on my temporary resident visa/status.
A bit of search into this online tells me that I can actually apply for a TRV to Canada before I leave for India, by submitting my application to an out-of-Canada consulate (likely in US - Buffalo or Detroit?)
My query is - has anybody else gone through this experience? Where did you apply? How much time did it take for you to get your passport back, with the new TRV? Any advice on this?
Somehow, I am not comfortable about posting my passport out of Canada. But since my planned visit to India in Nov '06 is just a week long (hence not enough time to go through the whole process there) I have no other option than applying beforehand. I'd really appreciate if somebody else can share their experience on this. Many thanks for your time.

Thanks dimple2001 for a prompt response. Having been in UK earlier on a work permit for three years and never having had to apply for an entry visa again when returning to UK from India during this time, was the reason I was surprised to find an additional formality in case of returning to Canada (while on a valid work permit). Understandable though that different countries have different sets of rules.
Anyway, I'd still appreciate if anybody else can share their experience on this. Were you called for an interview by the Canadian consulate in US? Time processing etc?
