Here's the scenario...

-Canadian PR has a valid US visitor visa; valid upto 2010
-travels to US by road on 2 day trip to visit friends, mentions this to US customs officer while crossing (i.e. only 2 day travel desired)
- Border offical stamps a 6 month entry regardless and attaches bottom portion of I-94
- Canadian PR returns to Canada in a couple of days, but plans to travel again to the states via road in a week.


The question is

Does the PR need to surrender the I-94 when he returns from the first trip (despite intending to travel again in a week)

I've heard conflicting answers. On the I-94 it clearly mentions that it needs to be returned and no exceptions are mentioned.

But several forums and (in a confusing way) even the USCIS site mentions that for contigious terrorities (i.e. Canada, Mexico) if the visitor intends to re-enter US within 30 days, the same I-94 can be used so long as

1) The I-94 has not expired
2) The original visa that resulted in the I-94 has not expired.

Can someone give me a definitive answer on this? Would also appreciate if someone can narrate a first-hand experience.

You do not have to return your I-94. You can keep it with you till it expires and then get a new one

There is no need to return your I-94. I am doing this regularly. Once I-94 expires you can get a new one valid for 6 months by paying $6.
