I make my own garam masala, but I make enough to last me about a year. Garlic, ginger, green chillies, coriander, I normally use fresh...but I have just started to use the ready made garlic paste - and it's good. My SIL uses ready made stuff all the time and her cooking is great so I think I need to get more ready made stuff.

What do you guys use?

Oh ok.
I like home made garam masala. Ginger powder/garlic powder is good but i like fresh ginger/garlic too. Coriander can be dried and then put in the fridge.

Does your MIL like other cuisines?

I know what you mean (cos my MIL saves me from having to do too much cooking) however the PRIVACY can be a big issue depending on your home, your families personal boundaries etc.
