If you are not a PM & not in IT only technical then it will be difficult to cut the ice. Start with coordinator first. PMP with PM exp complements very well. It is like MBA with no exp is difficult to enter the market. I know Rotman's graduates for 65-70K in Bell.
If you have systems manager with PM experience then your range goes (90K-120K). PM with 9 years exp 80K -105K. It also depends what area you work in for eg. CRM or financial or data.
When you go through PMP they always decouple technology and type of project but in real life CRM company will look for a PM with CRM implementation experience etc.

Mercury has hit the hammer on the head(or is the nail), well said. From what I have seen lately, and this is from my personal experience - I was in the market (without a job) and looking for a job from March to June. What I found is that the average salary range has dropped. BUT having a PMP does give you an edge over the other candidates. So if an employer was to make a choice between 2 candidates, one with a PMP and the other without the choice was obvious.
In those 3 months I found the market to be offering in the range of $80K to $95K for an IT guy with around 10 yrs exp. Employers were offering me contracts for $40 to 50/hr.

Yellowknife, Mercury has answered your query. The idea is to try and get atleast some Team Lead experience in your current job before you seek a jump.
Just as an FYI, I now work for the Provincial Govt, as a fulltime employee.

Yes you guys are right. Forget the salary, if you are in the IT field with close to 8-9 years of experience and some of it team lead experience, it seems it is still tough to get a PM job(even with a PMP) unless you have some PM experience. This has been my experience.. so far.
