'Vande Mataram against Islamic beliefs'
August 20, 2006 20:46 IST
National song Vande Mataram is 'against Islamic beliefs' and asking Muslims to sing it would amount to 'suppression' of the community, Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari said on Sunday.
Addressing a press meet in Allahabad, Bukhari, who is also patron of the United Democratic Front, said according to the tenets of Islam, one could love one's country and even lay down one's life for it if the circumstances so demand.
"But when it comes to worship only Allah is given that honour. A Muslim cannot worship his or her parents, motherland and even the Prophet though they are held in high esteem," he said, reacting to a Central directive to states for recitation of Vande Mataram in educational institutions during a celebration on September 7 to mark the national song's centenary.
"Ever since independence, all governments at the Centre and in the states have been suppressing Muslims. This proposal is yet another example. If somebody sings Vande Mataram voluntarily, I have no objections. But if people are forced to do so, it will meet with resistance," Bukhari said.

Whats new about this? This is not the first time this issue has been raised by clerics in India. But the claim that government is suppressing muslims by asking them to sing Vande Mataram is really sickeningly pathetic.
I can't understand anyone's opposition to a song praising the country one lives in.
If a person's allegiance lies elsewhere, then they better go there

Goldeneye, this lunatic should be prosecuted and sentenced for sedition...
I find it ironic that while another Devout Muslim proudly sings this song, the Govt and many apologists for the Lunatic described above will go on defending their "right" to not sing this song (considering it un-islamic) !!! Shame on them and hats off to the fellow in the link below !!!

Endorsing Union HRD minister Arjun Singh's views, Congress on Monday said the direction to educational institutions on recitation of 'Vande Mataram' in educational institutions was not mandatory but "voluntary in nature" and any community was free to recite it or not.

pathetic
Why isn't there any fatwa against ARR for singing "Vande Mataram"?
Meghal
Every third automobile taking the reverse gear (in India) sings “Vande Mataram”. Does it mean the automobile driver/owner is patriotic, even though he may be a corrupt politician, bureaucrat or businessman?
