Hi all,

My son and I just got Canadian citizenship and will be applying for the passport. We have booked tickets to go to India in Dec. I don't want to take the PIO card yet as there isnt much time left. Do I have to take the tourist visa to India then? And what about my kid(11 yrs old)? Does he have to fill in another tourist visa application or should be included with mine? I understand at the Embassy they will be cancelling my Indian passport when I do that. But will they insist for the PIO card when I reach there?
Please help.

Yes, you will need a tourist visa and your son will need one too. Your son will have to fill a separate form. Your Indian pp will be cancelled by the embassy in Toronto, when you apply for a tourist visa.

Didn't quite understand who will ask you for a PIO card. It's either a PIO card or a visa to enter India.

For a son, may I suggest apply for a PIO card and then apply for a OCI card (if you are planning on one). It's cheaper that way. (Thanks to Chandresh for that tip)

For more details check the Consulate's website - http://www.cgitoronto.ca/

Having a PIO card will not give you the privileges of being escorted and cleared sooner, But there is a separate line forPIO and OCIC card holders in the airport immigration.

Important note to all indian- canadians: When you are in India be an Indian, be calm and stand in line like the rest do not be rude or arrogant just because you have canadian PP.

Make no mistake I assure you, you will be purposely delayed by immigration personnel.Remember you are still indian first and then anythingelse.

Your passport is a travel documentonly and not a birth certificate.

Ad1760 or so,
I donot think so. If you hold an Indian passport and a PR to Canada, You can be rest assured that the Indian customs/ Immigration will harrass you. Make no mistake about it. You still hold an Indian Passport and the customs/Immigration will treat you likewise.
OTOH, Holding a Canadian passport gives you an edge in India. You can threaten the Indian people (if they harrass you) that you will call your Canadian Embassy in New Delhi and let them handle the situation, Then just see how the Customs/Immigration officials become afraid of you.
I found that recently out when how they treated our group with respect when just one member of our group had a Cdn. Passport.
Also when i was studying in a premier engg. college in TN, We were specifically warned against not to fight with the Palestinians who studied there b'cos they (professors, co students, seniors) told us that we would be put in Jail even though the fault would have been theirs.
It still happens in India.
Haven't you heard of stories in the Gulf that if you had an American / British passport , you had a good chance of going scott free even though you might have been caught using drugs, sexual harrasment etc...?
I donot advocate supremacy of the Canadian passport over Indian passport but only am highlighting the unpracticality of your statement.

I studied wz Foreign students too in Chennai and the reason you avoid having troubles wz them is not because of their passport but rather their bribing power.. Most of these students were cash rich ( ofcourse the situation changes after the Gulf War when most of their were chased out of the Gulf ) and the local guys were exploiting them ... I have moved wz thm very closely and I know the number of things they could do .. also another imp reason is the nice nature of our people towards Foreigners.. They go out of the way to help them ( I don't know why ??????)

Apparently you havent understood my posting. you are trying to tell the same thing differently. The message is person or persons who are impatietnt rude or just trying to show off when they get to india. As I said It is immaterial what color of passport you have , you will still be treated like a desi ( look at the mirror, can you see yourself white???). I hope you get the message now.
