Hi there,

I am reader of CD's newsgroup since long time but this is my first posting.

I am teaching Mathematics to my kids in class 4 & 6th. I am good in Maths and it was one of my favorite subject.

You know, the questions or approach is totally different as we used to in India/Pakistan. Sometime I stuck in questions and couldn't figure out how to solve the question.

I am looking for any books/internet site from where I get some help. I don't want to spend $200/$300 per month to send my teacher in any academy.

Could you please let me help and share with me how you guys helping your kids in maths.

Regards
Adnan

I dont know how the curriculum is in Pakistan. I can, however, tell you that students/kids from India do not find the Math hard here at all. In fact it is quite trivial for kids from India to come here and start off with an advantage over local kids.
Here, more emphasis is given on practically teaching maths, rather than the abstract way used in India. I don't know how it is now in India. Maybe it has changed, but i doubt it. I will give you an example:

In India we would ask a question like this:
Q.) What is 50 divided by 3 ?

The same question, for kids weak in maths might be asked in a more non-abstract form as

Q.) Jack has 50 playing cards. He has his friends John, Michel and Louis. He wants to give the cards to his friends. Can he give all his friends an equal number of cards ? If yes how many would that be ?

The fact is, the problem is the same, but the approach is different. I like the latter approach. But I do like the abstract way also as it does not trivialize the subject. Maybe it all depends on how you want to approach the subject. After all, its your kids who have to learn the subject.

ON,
In 1983, I studied 7th std. in Trichy, TN. There was one math teacher who taught me the same way. He would use Samosa's as an abstract. ALl the other kids used to laugh at him b'cos they were all used to the normal way of doing math e.g. 100/3. I was new to India at that time and he was my first math teacher in India
However over the years that i was in the same school (for 6 years more), I could not find a teacher like him. However i found some math teacher (esp. private tutors) who could beautifully explain maths in the normal way. e.g. the same 100/3 but explain in a more undertandable way what is 100, what is 3 what is division etc...
I have found that children from Canada struggle in math once they reach india (b'cos the std. is too high) and they need private tutions to put them on the right track.
Just my exp.

Oh Dear... I should add there were indeed exceptions...

When I was in my 9th grade we had a replacement teacher for 2 months. His way of teaching was awesome...All sorts of vegetables, fruits would come up in the class. I was really headstrong and did not enjoy Math at all. Can you believe it, I used to "mug-up" steps from geometry before writing the exam ??

Now after he came, my enthusiasm for Math increased. So much so I decided to solve problems from 3 additional chapters way before everyone in the class !!! From then it was no looking back.

I think, we do need something different in teaching Math to kids. It really helps them.

ON,
I second you on that. When i first came from a foreign country to India in 1983 (7th std.), I wrote in my own words. I got very low marks and all my friends told me that i had to reproduce exactly what was in the text book. and so for the next 6 years, i practiced "mugging up" and in my 12 th. std. I was the greatest "mugger" of our class. I got 198/200 in maths by reproducing mugging.
After 12th., I enterted Architecture where there was no need to mug up. The xams were mainly drawings and the theroy was mostly stories of buildings or theory of just 4 or 5 pages for an entire semester. There was no Math at all in Architetcure nor was there English. The initial boom of the IT industry required people who studied math in their graduate studies and hence we were reluctant / not able to switch over. When at a latter date that every T , D and H could be an IT professional, I was out of the country.

Just a question - to add to the discussion.

1) What is "mugging"?
