The Indian company who is willing to send you samples wants you to pay for the courier. There is no customs duty when you are getting samples. Being a starter I would recommend you go to some local courier and have them arrange to pick your package from India. Courier is the fast and reliable method. Hope this helps and all the best.

Cheers

As long as it is samples, no duties. You can still import small quantities via courier, but is is expensive.

How many times a year can a businessman import samples? If its not sent through courier, is it the same for shipping and does it have to be less than a partucular amount of weight? Or does it have to be an open package?

from INDIA you can get samples by the courier of simple Indian post service.

courier is costly then indian post.

by air is too much costly.
by sea is cheap (fro india to canada, From canada to india it's costly for starter)

Indian post take parcle packed in cloth packing . put letter with it what's contetn and what's price around rs 100/- just for custom purpose.
in canada it will deliver by canadapost to your home or office.
for this there is weight limit ask at indian post office.

FEDEX, DHL etc are extermly costly and mostly they do by AIR....
