Is Canada the right place for you?
By:

Having been in Canada for almost 3 yrs now, I have seen frustations of many a people, Desi or firangi, professional or graduate only, north or south Indian etc. etc.

The whole things boils down to two things - what did you expect from Canada, and how did you plan to achieve it. And based on these 2 things, the final thing is - what are you willing to do after having come here. People have different reasons, different backgrounds, and definitely, different expectations!

Having moved to different countries five times , and having travelled to a dozen or so countries around the globe before coming to Canada, initial settling down procedures was a breeze for us - whether it be SIN, or drivers test or finding our way around thru bus, subway or even rental cars. What was really difficult was - finding a suitable occupation. And the reason was - what was recognised by the Immigration dept as good qualification or experience to settle down in Canada and help it grow, was not good enough for Canadian employers.

Well, I DON'T THINK EMPLOYERS ARE WRONG when they require you to have Canadian experience - by that they do not mean whether or not you have the technical knowledge required in Canada; they mean more of social skills and learning the silly ways of doing things in Canada. You have to realize that though you might have more knowledge or experience to do things in a better manner, what counts is "are you able to do it in as silly a manner as we do it and as we understand it?" And therefore they need people with Canadian experience - so that they speak the same language as Canadians, they understand that your food might have basmati rice, but it smells to them, that you might be ready to go out of your way to achieve results in time or help a colleague in his work, but you should not do so - because emotions and human bondage is not a way of life in Canada.

We all know that:
1. the medical help is absolutely lousy here
2. the education system is plagued by govt.'s lack of funding and laws of "untouchability", work to rule, etc. etc.
3. the racism is clearly and bluntly evident
4. corruption is of no less order than in India
5. family values have very very low priority in Canadian culture
6. temperatures are extreme here
7. crime is quite common here
8. cost of living compared to gross salaries is very high
9. taxes are one of the highest (or highest??) in the world
10. etc. etc. etc. etc. ............

and so there is no use discussing the obvious and rhetoric.

After almost three years here, my conclusion is that Canada is in need of coloured labour force who can do the dirty work for the "earlier white immigrants" (they THINK they are Canadians, and we are immigrants!), and not for anyone who has/ had (in India or anywhere outside of Canada):

a. a professional qualification, or
b. good work experience at supervisory level or higher
c. a car
d. a house or aparment in a small/big city
e. children attending school
f. a social status, networking,
g. a place to call home!

THE DECISION TO TAKE IS:
i) are you dissatisfied to the extent you can't help but keep complaining?
ii) are you not getting what you had dreamt of a life in Canada?

THEN WHY DON'T YOU GO BACK? All the reasons you might give (social face saving, children's education, no immediate job back home etc.etc.) are just excuses. Once you are sure you are not getting what you expected, and you can't change the Canadians, do yourself a favour - GO BACK, and tell your friends not to make such mistakes as you did.

Before I voluntarily resigned, till yesterday I had a job of a senior manager in a manufacturing company in toronto, with good prospects of rising in the organisation and getting reasonable financial rewards to lead a comfortable life with remuneration of my wife as a teacher in York School Board - but I have had enough of it - I DO NOT WANT TO CHANGE MY NAME FROM CHANDRESH TO CHARLES - AND MY WIFE DOES NOT LIKE SENDING A CHILD TO SOCIAL WORKER WITHOUT FIRST TRYING TO SORT OUT PROBLEMS WITH THE CHILD AND HIS FAMILY AND SHOWING THAT SHE REALLY CARES - and next month I am leaving this country - even without getting citizenship - BECAUSE THIS IS NOT THE KIND OF LIFE I WANT!

LEARN ONE THING FROM CANADIANS - IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, YOU DONT HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT!

I noticed some people calling this site negative.

What is the reason? Infact this site is full of success stories. Are people like to read bad things and memorise them more than good things?

There are very good articles from Yogesh, Rakesh, Rashmi etc. about thier successes.

And there are negative articles from some users.

One reason I can think rightnow is Chandresh. He has written so many negative things about this country and he is the most active user today.

Can we have somebody positive active user soon?

Surti,
Why wait for someone else? Why dont you take the first step? That itself will contribute to peoples positive/negative perception. The thing is, its easier to judge than to put your perspective and thoughts/experiences and be judged. The people who do so, even though I dont agree with all that they say, have to be appreciated for their courage.

Surti, I agree with Jake. Chandresh is not negative, he is being very honest and brave in posting his bad experiences so far, something which many people will shy away from. We just get a chance to learn from other's experiences.
But one should never lose hope and keep oneself in high spirits. Always.

I am not trying to defend Chandresh, but success and failure is a matter of time, Chandresh may be struggling so far but who knows, his success may be just around the corner, and (God forbid) vis-e versa for those who are very successful.
That is life . Everyone passes thru different phases at different times. We are fortunate to get share and learn form some of their experiences.

and yes, I agree with you , we need more success stories. !! and there are plenty...just not that many on this board.

Wishing everyone good luck!!
Samir

Seems like there are too many regulars contributing to this site called 'senior desis'. Admit that most of them are answers to queries by 'junior desis'. Why the discrimination...senior and junior.
What Surti is trying to say that the forum should be more realistic (positive) than depressive (negative). After all we have already made a decision about making Canada our home and take a stride to fight the odds. One lesson i have learnt is to be 'one-up' than our conterparts who were born, educated and bred here. We have all the skills, commitment and disciplin and hard work to be successful.

what discrimination? Senior/junior does not mean anything. Just today I've been debating against GG the developer of this site with more than 1000 mails to his credit. Its all in good spirit. Everyone gets to say what they want as long as one can put the point across in a clear and consise manner. Why not be a regular yourself and post positive messages yourself? If you wait for someone else to do it , they will do it in their own way , it may not be what you want to read/hear. If you feel you have positive experiences to share...please do. The tide will change and it WILL be more positive voices than negative/depressive. In my humble opinion, picking out people by name and making them feel that they should not relate their experiences is not the right way to go about it. Be the experience negative or positive. Negate someones negative accounts with your positive accounts. That will change the tone and tenor of the site. Do you think I'm making sense?
Also like Surti says...people tend to retain negatives more than positives...e.g: I have always been saying that i LOVE it here and do not dream of going back to India.
Note: recently..the cold...its making me about thinking of moving to L.A

Jake,

Thank you for the kind comment.

As Surti, I also noticed that this site has more negative comments. But again, it is like in business - if you do a good job, customer may tell 3 other people but if you do a really bad job, customer will tell 50 other people.

What I have experienced that people who immigrate directly from India to US/Canada and have family and were doing well in India tend to be the unhappy ones. This has to do with expectations and continued chase for the \"status\" as in India.

As an example, recently one of my distant relative who immigrated to Canada 3 years ago directly from India, has a family (wife and couple of kids) wanted to borrow some money for making a downpayment on a house. I just couldn't believe that why a person who is still struggling, can not afford to make a downpayment will consider buying such a house and taking the responsibility of a mortgage. After talking to several people I realized it has to do with \"status symbol.\"

Recently, I read an interesting column in Marketing magaize by a Canadian advertising executive who was comparing working for an advertising company in US and in Canada. The article title was \"Red White and Red\" It was interesting comparison for work culture between the two countries and how it relates to early days of immigration in both countries. Hudson Bay, the early settlers brought the people to Canada who were fit to work for them whereas early settlers in US brought people over who can join the land rush. Basically, worker-bee vs. risk-takers.

I see the same thing from the comments on this site - people complaining are the ones who have worker-bee attitude. They want to have all the comfort but just don't want to make effort for it or take risk to acheive it.

Sorry for being so hard!
