There are also credit unions that will give you free banking but may not give you all the credit you desire.
Personally, other institutions give better deals than the big 5 banks. I am told Canadian Western Bank (CWB)is excellent in this regard but have no experience with them as they are West Coast based, but certain people in TO enjoy excellent facilities with them and they are very flexible when they see potential in the bznz- like outsourcing for instance.
Perhaps people on this board who have connections with CWB can inform us better.
In my case I have my bznz a/c with ICICI and have 0 carrying expenses and excellent interest on used portion. But I believe there are charging now. My a/c was opened at the outset when their only branch was at the FCP downtown, and is 'grandfathered'.
I read a lot about the lousy service some of you get from ICICI but my experience is that they are very good.
To open an account..
1. decide what is the purpose of the acc ..is it chequing or savings
2. for sav number of transactions you will do per month is impotant ..many a times an acc with no fees will be charging fees per transaction you will end up paying more.
3. Accessibility some banks do not have many branches and their atms are not easily accesssible dont know if you have to pay to use other banks atms
4.fee charge for acc do a comparitive shopping.
I would recommend if you are opening your first bank acc then follow the criteria and then choose one out of the big 5
If you are looking for a sav acc with high interest then look for high interest e savings account of RBC it is giving 4% interest as introductory offer
