Hi,
I'm currently doing online research on Oakville and noticed that people comment Oakville to be an expensive place compared to other GTA cities. Is it true? How expensive it is? Which other city (except Missi/Brampton) can be good to relocate in GTA.
Thanks
Jona
This is so bizarre. Let me take a crack at it.
Oakville is a beautiful suburb. I worked there for a year at a company on Wyecroft road and did look into the area before I settled for a townhome in Mississauga.
This is personally my opinion based on what I saw - Oakville is a predominantly white neighborhood. Not that there's anything wrong with it. It was not a factor for me, but I thought I should mention. And yes, homes were expensive. Proly because most of them are comparitively old. At least I didn't see many new developments. It could have changed.
I don't know where you are now and I have no idea what you are looking for...but Burlington could be an option (assuming you are west-ish inclined). I saw some new properties there for a bit and was pretty impressed. My complaint was it was too far west. That's it. And the only way to get across was QEW or the GO. The former chokes and the later...well its anyone's guess on any given day. GO sucks. Nuf said.
I personally HATE Scarberia (Scarborough).
Richmond Hill, Markham and Vaughan are all great but I found real estate prices to be substantially more bloated than Mississauga. I didn't give a damn as to why that could be.
All said and done, what's you beef against Mississauga, Brampton? Just curious...
Oakville is beautiful. It has many hiking trails, golf courses, great schools, scenic beauty and above it is well connected with GO Train, QEW and HWY 407. One can find famous Vaishno Devi Temple, Khalsa Dr Gurudwara and QEW / South Down Rd mosque in Oakville.
Oakville is due for development (some 2,800 hectares) in the north of Dundas and south of the 407. This is the last urban area in the official plan. Over the next 20 to 30 years, it's targeted to house 50,000 to 55,000 people.
Oakville is well respected for its quality of life, mixed demography, good schools and proximity to Downtown Toronto. I personally have moved many desi families to Oakville.
Regards,

Hi Raj and Amit,
Thanks for your input!
Raj, by coincidence my husband's name is also Raj!
We were not interested in Missi and Brampton as we think they might be bit crowded (not sure if I'm right or wrong...I haven't seen any of them...neither have I seen Oakville). We live in Suriname, South America and the city is very small. These 8 yrs I've lost the touch of big cities (originally from Delhi ...was working...and know how it is). Our prime goal to relocate was for our twins (3yrs) and that too we don't want to do now. We only wanted to invest in a home/condo before we relocated (or before properties are more expensive) and I liked Oakville just because "if its quite neighborhood", I mean if it has a small city feel and still be easier for my husband who'll be commuting to downtown daily for work.
Is it true that it takes 20 minutes from Oakville to Downtown by GO? I've no idea of GO trains too. Will there be work opportunities for me? My husband has his job in downtown (we are currently on a project in Suriname and intend to return in 2009 or 2010) but I'll need to start afresh. I'm an accountant and work with WHO (World health org).
Please let me know before we decide anything on Oakville.
Thanks..................Jona (sorry for the long post)
I can't speak about Oakville in too much detail other than the GO train part..
I think budgeting only 20 mins for the GO train to get downtown from Oakville is a bit ambitious.
It would also depend on where you/your husband will work in downtown in Toronto. Hopefully an extra TTC ride won't be necessary.
........... is to check google maps and also visit the GO and TTC maps to get guesstimates of times spent for commuting.

Hi, I think I lost my question somewhere with GO train! I'm not exactly asking for the commuting time. I was asking overall idea on Oakville for a place to be relocated...commuting wise....neighborhood...expensive groceries...expensive houses...schooling...job factor??? Any input on any of these issues...your experiences or opinions is what I want to hear.
Thanks.......................Jona
