Well, I like Jay Leno show better then Letterman, first off because of the chemistry between Kevin Eubanks and Jay. They keep on mocking each other. Jaywalking segment is funny. And he in general makes the show much more entertaining.
You guys are talking about Jay Leno and Dave Letterman. Think of the guy who will be replacing Jay in 2009 - "Conan the Barbarian". God Save NBC.
What about our own Canadian - what is his name ?( I cannot spell his long greek name).
I've been watching the late night shows since 1986 and that is from Johnny Carson days. The tongue cheek humour is gone - which was the hall mark of Johnny carson, Doc Severson and our own Ed McMahon. They have been replaced by stand up comedians like Jay Leno and company.
Now a days each late night guys is focussing on a clear cut ethnic population. While Dave is targetting middle class Whites including the baby boomers, while Jay Leno is targetting the middle of line white/black population and they have a stiff competition from Jimmy Kimmel who is targetting the Latinos.
You also have John Stewart coming into the competition at similar time and hence the whole late night talk show pie is being divided. May be we will have a Desi talk show host in the coming days. In future we will be comparing John stewart with Steven or the subsequent talk show hosts who will be emerging out of John stewarts show including the OFFICE guy who stars on the Almighty movie.
My personal vote is for Dave Letterman for his dry, off the cuff - humour. Most of the guests in his program literally s*@t in their pants as they do not which way his questioning would go. If he really takes off on his guest they are finished and they would not what hit him. The best thing I like about David is that he does not bring race, so much of politics or his personal opinions onto his show, while Jay tends to be more republican, patriotic bashing off shoring, outsourcing and taking sly remarks on people of other races. Look at the way he keeps bashing up Kevin Nubanks about being gay, pot head and similar stuff. You will never find that being done by Dave on his KEY CANADIAN band leader. Who himself is a legend on his own!.
I do not know how long Dave will be on after his quadrapale bypass surgery!.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
I personally prefer Letterman and could not take to JayLeno the couple of times I tried to switch. Even the ambience of Jay Lenos set kinda disturbs me. Jon Stewart is very funny though very biased politically unlike Letterman who disses everyone if given the opportunity.
I think its very subjective though. Like, if one is used to the TOI its not easy to switch to the IE. Different strokes...

Personaly, I like Jay Leno over Letterman.
By the way, Russell Peters now is the highest paid stand-up commedian in Canada.
Regarding Rusell Peters did you guys see his bachelor pad in LA as featured in the MTV show Cribs. The highlight was his dresser in his bedroom containing all his PORN which he displayed proudly. He drives a Porsche(if I'm correct) along with an Audi also.
I read somewhere that his earnings for last year was a cool 5 Million plus. He is currently working on a few pilots for sitcoms in hollywood along with topnotch sitcom producers.
May be Rusell Peters will be our Desi Eddi Murphy if not atleast George Lopez.
As Rusell says "Somebody gonna get it"!.

Please find herewith two jokes from Jay and Daves monologues and decide for yourself who is better:
\"President Bush is back from his big European tour. He became the first president to ever visit Albania. He got a hero's welcome there. Although there was one awkward moment when he told the crowd, \"I love you albino people.\"- Jay Leno.
\"President Bush made a terrible mistake over at the Vatican. President Bush referred to the Pope as 'sir,' as opposed to his Holiness. I fire people for that.\" - David Letterman.
I personally feel comparing Jay and Dave is like comparing the comedy styles of Utpal Dutt (watch Gol Maal http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079221/usercomments along with Amol Palekar)and Johnny Lever.
