IT / BPO industry have attrition because they cannot hold on to their employees because with so much opportunities , people are changing their jobs before batting their eyelids. I basing this on personal knowledge and not HT / TOI articles .

I do not speak for the English impaired 3rd divisioner graduates (B Com / BAs ) or Govt servants or farmers or politicians or bueracrats - as they are not a part of this phenomenon and rightly so they do not deserve it .

Bottom line - if you are a well educated Indian graduate (and the no. is millions) Indian economy has got a well paying job for you unlike before. This is because of globalization , open trade and low cost of living in India besides skills.

Well said Fido and Jona!
While I 100% agree that Changing the whole of India to Canada is impossible (eg. wide roads, Clean roads, No pollution, Less traffic), there is a tremendos upsurge in salaries and jobs available. As I said before (In Chennai), a graduate receptionist in a small company is drawing 10K a month. It was Rs.1K just 4 years ago. The growth is tremendous. So just b'cos of this ecomonic growth do not think that the Kothawal Chavadi of Chennai is like a farmers market of Canada. It is still a dirty place and is even dirtier if it rains. But life for a segement of the population is certainly very good. New foreign goods shops, New restaurants, New shopping malls, New cine plexes are opening up constantly. Also as i said before, If some one owned a piece of land in Chennai the cost is around 1 crore plus. Let me tell you some true stories.

1. A male nurse earning about Rs. 1000 a month 30 years back. Living hand to mouth. Bought a small piece of land in Vyazer padi and construced a house in phases. After 30 years, his sons were earning about Rs. 3000 a months (3 years back). They were just a lower middle class family taking the bus as transit. Now just their land is worth 1 crore. Can you imagine, what they can do now with 1 crore?

2. An clerk at the SBI. Worked for 30 years. Had the regular salary of a teller in SBI. He had a wife and 1 boy and 1 girl. Took loans and built 2 houses in Besant nagar. His property is worth 4 crores today !

So this is the kind of situation of India. People have money to burn since salaries have increased and most people have a good investment.

When there is an opportunity, people need to grab it. Like the SBI staff, they get loans at a dirt cheap interest rate. In fact I know couple of bank staff who borrow money from their bank at a low rate, invest at a higher interest rate outside their bank. That's the opportunity they grabbed. Individual effort is important with change in attitudes.

One quick question to all those who are lauding the "boom" in India ? What percentage of the total Indian population of over 1 billion is made up of software and BPO industry employees?

I think that there is no meaning in the discussion if we do not have these figures and if they are a small percentage of the total population (and their income can impact the other major portion of the Indian population......... well there certainly is something to worry about.

On a lighter note, did anyone who is vicariously enjoying the "boom" in India, decide to go over and experience it for real........... what's the harm anyway? I know those who vicariously experience do not have the courage to be at the scene........ Kya kaha kiseenay - the other side of the grass is (always) greener, until you go there to realize that was a mirage!

Good luck.

Mera Canada Mahaan!
Mera India bhi mahaan.
Wahan ka Booming economy, new found prosperity and uncontrolled inflation bhi mahaan!

Jai hind!

PS: Kudos to the original poster shankaracharya, who must be smiling.

It's interesting. Why can't you speak about those English impaired 3rd divisioner graduates, Govt. servants, or farmers, when they constitutes a bigger percentage in Indian population? India is having more villages than towns, more agriculture land than the skyscrapers real estate. Hence, more farmers than your white collar (very small percentage of) IT professionals.

If you talk about India, then I believe it's "India - The Nation" (no?), which constitutes more of Farmers, 3rd divisioner graduates than Engineers and Doctors, and your city's call-centre dudes. India's 65% population still lives in villages where infrastructure, education, and reforms, booming economy haven't yet touched the ground. So, if the things have not changed for a regular farmer, a Govt. servant and a Graduate (even a 3rd division holder), then I still think it's just a hype which is only surrounded in English language media circles. Yes, I agree that people are earning a lot than before, but the percentage of such people are very very less than the large part of 'India - The Nation'.

Now, let's see what the statistics show. As per the WDI (World Development Index) India's per capita income is just a bit higher than that of sub-Saharan Africa, and about one-sixth that of Latin America. ref. http://www.worldbank.org/

Equally shocking is that 35% of India's population lives on less than $1 a day, which is comparable to Bangladesh's 36% and much worse than Pakistan's 17% and Sri Lanka's 6%.

So, if it's 35% then you can add the other part of the population that lives below the poverty line and the ones that you count in the lower middle class.

Now, please take into account the ratio of income earned by a country's richest 10% and the poorest 10%. The ratio for India is 7.3. That is, the richest 10% of the population is a little over seven times as rich as the poorest 10%.

The above are not the self generated figures but the excerpts taken by the World Bank reports and articles from the well known economists.

Believe it or not - all upto you!!! In my eyes, unless the economy boom reaches small towns, villages, common man, farmers in terms of buying real estate, sending their kids in good schools, affording life's necessities, India can only be called booming in IT Sector. That's it.

Cir57,

You have not taken into account the spill over effect. Once IT boomed in India and they had money to burn, the ecomony started diversifying. IT people need offices, computers, supplies and infrastructure. This lead to trendous grown for Architects, Int. Designers, Cars, Motor cylces, Realestate, dress, construction materials and workers, food outlets etc., etc..
Architects are getting 30K (with 10 years experience). The salary for 10 years experienced Architects was Rs. 5000 in 1994 and for fresh architects 10 years ago was Rs. 2000. Now nely garduated Architects are getting 20K + in B'lore. Fresh CA's (with 6 months experience ) are getting 30K in Chennai.
