I am thinking to carry a mobile from India. Will it work in Canada? Which service provider is good? Reliance? High roaming charges?
Or should I just bring the instruent and hook up to Rogers or Bell?

Any suggestion much appreciated.

Airtel has got tie up with Rogers. If you buy airtel connection in india and deposit Rs. 5500 towards security, they will give you international roaming which works well in canada. so the answer to your first question is that indian cell phone with indian connection works well in india.

about expenses, your minimum monthly bill would be around Rs. 325 to 330 if you do not make or receive outgoing calls or send sms. there is no cost for receiving sms or a missed call. however if you make / receive calls then you will have to pay a lot.

on the other hand if you wish to bring a cell phone instrument from india just bring in any unlocked instrument (normally in india we get unlocked phone sets only) and when you bring it in canada, buy a connection from any service provider, who will give you its sin card which will work with your unlocked phone brought from india.

forgot to mention that i have nokia 6600.
just ensure that the cell phone set is tri-band because then they are good for any country. most of the latest modles are tri-band.

Hi guys,

My wife is bringing with herself a Motorola Razor (which she has already got in India). Is it possible that she buys a pre-paid of about 600 Rs. roaming from Airtel and can make calls from her way to Canada? Also, would Razor work in Canada with either Rogers or any other service provider? How to find out if the phone is unlocked?

I might sound stupid by being naive, but any response will be highly appreciated. Thanks a lot - well in advance.

Cheers :)

What do u mean by making calls from her way to Canada??? Make calls while on plane??

If she plans to call u while in airport, then it will be decided on factors such as whether her indian provider has any roaming tieup with any providers in the country where she's at that time..and the roaming charge can be really high for any calls made or received.

NOw to answer the original question, any GSM triband phone from india (as far as i know, all gsm phones in india are unlocked) will work with any GSM providers in Canada. (Note: GSM Phone and GSM Provider)...PERIOD.

Now, GSM providers that I know in Canada are ROGERS, FIDO, PETRO CANADA, SEARS (??), 7-11. Except Rogers n Fido (Both same company, but running as separate), all others are re-sellers..
