Houses are more affordable than Toronto and available too. try http://www.mls.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK

Desi community is present though not huge...roughly 70000 or so. But enough of desi shops etc...not as much as Toronto though.

Winters are colder.

Public schooling is in french(mandatory) if either of parents are not educated in english in canada. So almost all immigrants fall into this category. Unless you can afford private school.

Montreal is great to live in. I moved here from TO about 9 yrs ago. The only reason I'll move out is if I cannot afford to educate kids in English (high school) when the time comes.

IMHO, the most important factor is the availability of jobs. In my experience last year searching for IT jobs in Montreal, I found it a struggle to say the least.
Jobs in IT (which I assume is your field, from a previous post) are far less than Toronto.
You are automatically knocked out of contention for most jobs unless you are fluent in French. Even if you do manage to land a job, looking for the next job when you want to move up will be difficult.
During my stay of 2-3 months in Montreal, I didn't get more than a handful of calls. But even being located there, I was able to initiate and land a decent job in Toronto within a month of searching - and I was being selective because I was lucky to have sufficient funds and didn't have to take the first offer.
Something to consider...

Keep Ottawa as an option. Its either federal govt jobs or IT. That's Ottawa. Small city as compared to TO and Montreal. Near to Montreal.

I moved to Montreal 1 year back (i came with a job in hand, which has helped a lot!). I like the place, yes one has to be fluent in French ( for desi's this should not be a problem, as we have knack of learning languages easily, than other immigrants, they also teach French free for 5 yrs for new immigrants)

Things going Montréal way:
1. Low housing
2. Good quality of life
3. Nice blend of ethnic groups

Things not so good about Montréal
1. Vehement about the their French culture
2. Compulsory French education for kids (as explained in prev. post)
3. Taxes are very high
4. Lack of English speaking jobs

In my opinion this place is nice. My family likes it here.

Regards
Crisraj
