I am a professional with over 20 years experience in the newspaper business. My areas of expertise are: promotion, space marketing and editorials. I have been in Canada for 7 + years and work with a mainstream newspaper, promoting sales.

I have been toying with the idea of starting a community newspaper myself.

I know the first thought that might cross your mind would be - My god! Another newspaper! WHY? I would have thought on the same lines, had I not spent so much time as a professional in that field. I have done extensive background research on the owners of newspapers here, and the way they are run. Some newspapers doing reasonably well, are started/promoted and owned by people from diverse backgrounds (restaurant industry, real estate etc).

My take is - if that is true, then I am sure I can put in my 20 + years expertise to start something that is different, successful and unique.

Towards that end, I am on the lookout for individuals with experience and interest in editorial, space marketing (a.k.a :advertising), graphic design/ layout, Web designing and hosting, and promotion. I haven't decided on the name or the type of organizational set up (LLP or LLC).

I am open minded and am amenable to accepting any idea that would be viable, practical and lead to a path of success.

If you are someone you know is interested in such a venture, please feel free to write to me at All correspondence will be kept in strict confidence.

Also I welcome your suggestions and advice about various facets of this venture.

Thank you for your time and patience!

Hi Paperman57,

You are right -there are tons of community newspapers out there.

But no harm in adding another one.

I have lots of experience in selling ad space and am a part-time journalist for several periodicals both South Asian and mainstream- been at it on and off since college days.

I imagine you are envisioning a South Asian English Language newspaper. These usually are free and live only on ad money. You may get a grant from the govt but their total grant money last year was only $1.6m for all community newspapers incl. Italian, Portuguese, Hispanic, South Asian, Chinese, Filipino etc.

Please pm me and perhaps we can meet, though at the moment I am experiencing challenges accesing my message board. Happens sometimes, but this last week it has been frequent.Just post on this thread.

Any reason why moderators?Like me having problems accessing my board? I go in and it kicks me out. Probably doesn't like me.Has been happening too often this week.

Here is write-up on Nelly Furtado- enjoy.

Nelly Furtado is an extremely versatile Canadian Diva who sings in several languages including English, Portuguese, Spanish and Hindi. Several world-class artists including Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan have influenced her music. On December 31, 2006, on the coveted New Year’s Eve night, when better known cities such as New York, London, and Los Angeles among others, vie for globally renowned artists to perform, Nelly instead chose to perform at the Andheri Sports Complex in amchi Mumbai, India. In deference to this amazing singer, here follows a review of her recent concert in Toronto.

Canada’s baby hexes Toronto!

Nelly Furtado’s Live and Loose concert on April 5, 2007, started off with opener Jon Levine pounding and pelting away on the keyboards with hands and feet, backed by a drummer and guitarist, not prompting any reaction from the audience.
Then followed Saukrates, a Toronto rap band that had a head-banging long-haired guitarist putting a little life into the crowd by using the opening of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” to lead into a rap session. Saukrates breathed life into the auditorium by getting the crowd to clap their hands and sing alongside him, setting the stage for Nelly’s captivating performance.
Perked by Saukrates’ energy, the confluence of people had no trouble in jumping up to welcome Nelly, as she arrived by video-helicopter, walked down the stairs, as if from heaven like a Goddess, to open up a spectacular show with her hit single “ Say it Right”.
Backed by several musicians and a quartet of dancers wowing everybody with their sensational moves and grooves, Nelly went on to zap the crowd with “Turn off the light”, “Powerless”, “Do it” and several other songs as the lights played the colors of the Portuguese flag on the audience. A change of clothes to a maxi halter gown, and several slow songs including ‘ Crazy’, “Try” and “ All good things (come to an end)” had the Air Canada Centre singing along with her and connecting on an intimate level, all ending in thunderous applause.
She then disappeared, while her back up sang Justin Timberlake’s “Sexyback”, with the crowd enthusiastically cheering them on.
Back again in a stunning sleeveless white pant suit, Nelly sang some more of her memorable songs really sending the crowd into a tizzy as she broke into her evergreen hit “I’m like a bird” followed by “Glow ” and “Força” (meaning strength), the official song at the 2004 European Football championship. At that moment, she really grabbed the crowd by autographing a football (soccer ball) and sent it spinning into the audience for the lucky fan who jumped up and snatched it. Yeah! And then smack into “Promiscuous”, really sending the crowd into fantasy world! After that stupendous rendition, Nelly walked off the stage and the lights went out.
To overwhelming applause, with the adulating attendees yelling for more and chanting non-stop “Nelly, Nelly, Nelly …”, the Juno queen came back in a new ravishing outfit, to really showcase her best, singing a song in español, “No hay Igual”. She did an amazing jugalbandhi (duet) with the drummer, having her voice sounding out in synch with the drummer’s beat. That really wowed the animated audience. Then picking up the guitar and frenetically strumming it, she walked up to the end of the stage onto the mini catwalk, threw the plectrum into the crowd and slammed into the song everyone was waiting for, “Maneater”, with Saukrates joining in. Man oh man (eater), you should’ve seen the audience! There was no stopping them as they went totally wild! The huge backdrop screen had images of flames crackling throughout the song! Nelly even went over and showed her prowess on the drums with the performers and the audience joining together into an explosive eruption of pure raw energy as all mayhem broke “LOOSE”. Too much!
And then the concert really ended. Why oh why do “all good things (come to an end)?”
