Hi All,
Does anybody has any idea for starting a small trucking business? I am looking for buying a small Truck & give it to a compmay for long term lease. I am not looking for owner operator kind of thing. I will buy the truck & hire a driver & give it to a company.
Any Info/experience is most welcome.
Regards

Hi,

This was before your posting appeared here on the website.
I had an invitation to attend such a business seminar.
It was held on the 22nd of November 2007 here in Mississauga.
The Invitation was from SelecTrucks of Toronto.
They were looking for Owners and or Operators.
There is an 800 number which is 1 800 771 8171. Quote KRTS
The promoters were TST Truckload Express.
They claim that there is an earning potential of $70,000.00/annum.

I know a Russian, through another friend, who is looking for Owners who would give him a break- either as a partner or as an Operator who is currently in the USA on a Long Haul.

After your thorough analysis of this business, please let us know a little bit more about it and what your take is on this subject matter.

Freddie.

Hello there,

Trucking Business is good and has pretty decent money. But it is not a 9 - 5 job. You have to be on your toes, there are many things that you need to take care of if you plan to start one. If you are driver then you don’t have to worry about much (truck repairing, gas, installment, insurance etc). If you are an owner operator then i.e. you own the truck you have much responsibilities. Truck will only return money when it is on road, so you have to make sure you keep it on road, there are basically 2 types of jobs/contracts that a trucker can take
1) Dedicated Runs (You hire your truck with a company and company will give you work). These runs are run under contract. You MUST pick these loads otherwise the company gonna charge you for the loss they incur.
2) Freight(You have your own work i.e. you choose where to pick your load)
Addition to that you can drive truck in a city, but that’s only advisable if you are experienced.

So its advisable to go in trucking line if you have manpower, there is lot of work available for trucks. But on the other hand you may have to forget about weekends and spending much time with family.

Thanks

Coming to numbers, can someone give any idea; like the initial investment, monthly expenses and expected return and taxes etc. Here we are looking for some near factual figures only.
When we talk about botherations and spending restless weekends or days, can we think contracting out the truck to a driver/ company as an option. From no income to some income without worries is better than maximum possible income with all sort of worries.
Please shed more light. Also if some like minded persons are planning to pool the resources towards a bigger company, consider me as one of them.

You can rent out truck to a driver, but most important thing is that there is no thing as permanent driver. e.g if you get a load on your truck from Toronto to California(which is good whole week Monday to Friday, going and coming back). The thing is like other jobs, if a driver finds a better job.....say he finds a city job and dont want stay whole week on road and away from family....then it will be your responsibility(truck owner) to see that you find another driver for same. So its all in that job and moreover u need to have an AZ licence so that if u dont have anybody else then you take the truck and drive as you dont want to loose the trust with company from whom you pick/drop the load. Its not that you buy a truck rent to a driver and you forget it. If you dont know how much repairs, fuels, tickets, and other miscellaneous expenditures of truck are the driver can screw you up showing faulty or more expenditures. So best thing would be to drive the truck yourself first for couple of months.....see ins and outs of business and then rent to a driver. This is my personal opinion.

Thanks

Spaceman,
I fully agree with you but considering I do not have AZ license but being a Mechanical Engineer by profession, i can understand many thing about truck. What I am thinking of buying a new/ late model truck.- so that maintanance isuue can be avoided to a certain extent. may we pool our resource & go for 2 or more truck,& try to give truck on fixed rental on per day basis ( all misc. expenses on account of Driver/Renter/Trucking Company). As somebody advised it is better to have less profit with less tensionn then having more profit with more tension.
I am doing all research & post my findings shortly

I donot know what research you are looking into, but in 2004, when I came new to this country I wanted to start with this, hence I got some info, but not being too sure hesitated and didnot venture. As per my understanding, this is a low risk/guaranteed return business, there is a lot of hard work involved, I am not aware though with buying and giving it someone else to lease concept.
