I think he rightly deserves this, but is there any political motive behind this?

Purely Political .... Advani wants to kill two birds with one speech ...... by making this statement he has announced the retirement of Vajpayee and at the same time given some fodder to BJP to attack UPA for not respecting a national figure. Fully Filmi .....

If the issue is not political, then I see no objection in conferring BR to Vajpai. He was a true statesman, and I don't think other than 'Congress' any other Indian hates him. The whole country respects Mr. Vajpai, so my question is, why not?

Why not? He is respected by all parties including moderate muslims. He was the one who initiated the linking of the cities by highways. Some of the hwys we have was the brainchild of him. When he was the foreign minister, he had roped in the Isralies for support to ward off Pak.

Easily understood, he was obviously talking about Mr. Vajpayee. Anyway! Here's a brief piece of Mr. Vajpayee's profile:

"India's second highest civilian honor, the Padma Vibhushan, was conferred upon him in recognition of his selfless dedication to his first and only love, India, and his more than half-a-century of service to society and the nation. In 1994, he was named India's 'Best Parliamentarian.' The citation read: "True to his name, Atalji is an eminent national leader, an erudite politician, a selfless social worker, forceful orator, poet and litterateur, journalist and indeed a multi-faceted personality…Atalji articulates the aspirations of the masses… his works ever echo total commitment to nationalism."

Why Cheap? All of them have qualities that would get them a nomination for this award ..... atleast.......... Look at some of the past receipents .... considering that i think all of the above have a shot at it.
Rajiv Gandhi was involved with Bofors case when he was awarded ..... atleast none of the above have any corruption charges against them.

I can understand Atal Bihari Vajapayee and Jyoti Basu being nominated.
However, I don't believe Kanshi Ram has the length of public service to justify the award.
Just my personal opinion.

It's kind of like the Dadasaheb Phalke award for music.

To this day, I believe it was incorrect to give it to someone like Bhupen Hazarika (back in mid-1990s).

I haven't kept track of its receipients since then, but that was so wrong.
Not because he doesn't have the talent of whatever, but the length of service has to be taken into account.
