We are in the process of applying for a US visitor visa for a family function in May. I have a few questions and can some one who has gone through the process recently help me out.

The AMCITS website says fill out DS-156. But I saw on another website that you do also need DS-157. Can any one clarify? Do we need to fill out the form 157 online.?

I have an Indian passport with which I landed in Canada in 2005. I had another passport in India which was valid until 2002 or so but I did not get that to Canada. Would the US consulate require my old expired passport?

Iceberg,

Your confirmation package contains APPOINTMENT FOR NONIMMIGRANT VISA (NIV) INTERVIEW. In this letter point 4 says:
Fully completed, printed out and signed applications (online only DS-156 and DS-157)

Yes, you need both the forms completed and signed.

Good luck

Hi,

You need both DS-156 and 157. DS-156 should be filled online and print it and take it with you as after you complete the form, a barcode is issued. When they scan the barcode, they can get your details in their system.

You don't need the old passport.

I recommend booking an appointment well in advance. Depending on period of a year it takes 10 days to 2 months. Not sure about next few month rush.

Thanks to all.

I managed to get a appointment. The visa is for my wife, my son (6) and myself. The letter says

Quote:
DO NOT BRING:

Children 13 and under, adults 80 and over, and anyone not applying for a visa. Note : Applicants who are not required to make a personal appearance must be present in the Toronto consular district.

Does that mean we do not have to take our son, who though he is applying for a visa, to the US consulate. That is a pain. Where do we keep him for so many hours?

And what is this? must be present in Toronto consular district ....Does that mean he must be in Toronto when we go to the embassy?

We had taken our daughter (she as 9 at that time) when we went for the interview. Dont know if they have chnaged the rules now. As far as i remeber the letter did say not to being children under 13. My guess is you don't require him to accompany you for the visa but i dont think there is any restrictions on taking him along.
Toronto consular district area is most of Ontario, excepting areas covered under Ottawa consluate. So in case he is in GTA or nearby areas it should be ok.
