Is this some sort of a joke played out by SGPC and the state govt? High court stayed the order and now the state govt has filed an application with the supreme court challenging the stay of the high court.

Hmmm.. its like saying Tamils are a minority in Tamilnadu or Gujjus are a minority in Gujarat.

I am not sure about numbers but I think Sikhs are about 50 percent of Punjab's population.

Let someone from Punjab confirm this.

http://www.indianexpress.com/story/273471.htmIn Punjab there are so many families where one son is Sikh and other is non-sikh( doesn't wear turban) but all go to Gurudwara. How do they count, I wonder! These political parties will no chance or way to divide nation be it Caste/Creed/Sex/Religion...!

They are about 60% as per the census report of 2001. However what these peopel were contesting are the number of "actual"sikhs. In todays time with a lot of benefits going to the minority community, it is benefical to be labelled as a minority community.
They are saying that people like followers of Ram Rahim, Sach Sauda cult, are also counted as sikhs. So they want only those people counted as sikhs who are the "true"followers of the religion - namely who consider the "granth sahib" as the last guru ..... or something like that.
As i said it is vey beneficial for a community to be labelled an minority or OBC or even a ST. Funny that the gujjars, when they were fighting for schedule tribe status, did not ask for Schedule Caste status.
Even the dalits and OBC's dont want to be identified as schedule caste. They want a different status ..... one that does not have the taboo but has the benefits.

How about X% reservations in ALL federal and provincial govt hiring for new immigrants (or rather south asian immigrants :D ) arriving within the last 5 years?:D

Politicians are the same everywhere...:( :cuss:

A little unrelated news from the USA on the religious landscape of the country:

http://pewresearch.org/pubs/743/united-states-religion

Nearly half of Hindus in the U.S., one-third of Jews and a quarter of Buddhists have obtained post-graduate education, compared with only about one-in-ten of the adult population overall. Hindus and Jews are also much more
likely than other groups to report high income levels.

Do we have such numbers for Canada?

Reminds me of a joke
"Japenese president once told Rabdi Devi 'aap humko 2 years ke liye Bihar do hum usse Japan bana denge'
Rabdi Devi:'aap humko 2 Months ke liye Japan do hum usko Bihar bana denge'"
Reservation was one reason why we came here ...if the same happens here ..Gosh!!!
