1-Is it true? That there is no school in Toronto which provides education to kids from KG to 12th grades under one roof?

2-Is it true that catholic schools admit only roman catholic christian children not other religion kids?
[as i read that on one site]

3-After reading few threads I am double minded and not able to decide about moving soon or later........As in my case my elder daughter is completing 10th now. What will be better for her ??to complete 11th &12th from here in gulf then get admission in university there.
OR to shift her in grade 11 onwards in Canada?

4-How safe is for an Indian lady to stay alone with kids in Toronto?
5-which area would you prefer for better schooling and safe residence in Toronto?

Thanks

I can respond to some of your queries:

1-Is it true? That there is no school in Toronto which provides education to kids from KG to 12th grades under one roof?
True. We generally have 3 type of schools
Elementary from KG to 5/6
Middle from 6/7 to 8
High from 9 to 12

4-How safe is for an Indian lady to stay alone with kids in Toronto?
Generally safe. The odd incident can happen to anyone anywhere in the world. My counter Q - what's unique about an Indian lady

5-which area would you prefer for better schooling and safe residence in Toronto?
As regards schooling, you have to see what subjects your child is interested in. All high schools do not offer the same subjects, which ultimately leads to different streams in University or college.
Check the links to the various school boards in this thread -> http://canadiandesi.com/read.php?TID=12488 You can browse thru the various subjects offered by each school. That will help you to decide the school and ultimately the place of residence

In my view, bringing children over sooner than later, will help them adjust quicker.

In terms of safety, depends on where you are coming from -

TO is much safer than Delhi (and possibly other Indian cities) but not as safe as some cities (like Dubai). Where you stay will be critical for your safety/childrens education.

IMO - go to the best school you can find, these will usually be in the safer areas.

Good luck.

Newboyo --What is IMO???

As my husband does not want to leave the job and move to canada -So- I am deciding to move on alone with kids for the sake of their good future -----But now I am kind of losing courage to do so.
Please tell me-July or august-september - Which month will be better to get their school admissions done.

Thanks

Thanks for the useful information on Canadian schools available thru the link provided. I too need some help on schooling for my son.He is currently 4 years old and soon completing his KG in a reputed school in New Delhi.I have arrived here in Toronto nearly a month back and residing in Scarborough. However, my son will arrive with my wife sometime in April,2008. Below are my queries for you.

Q1 Is my son eligible for admission to elementary school now ? If yes, which are the good elementary schools in Scarborough where he could seek admission after he arrives ?

Q2 What documents are required at the time of admission and is there a test/interview of the child/parent for admission ? If not, what is the criteria for admission here ?

Q3 Is there any fees for his schooling and what are the typical school timings ?

Would appreciate a prompt reply.

IMO = In My Opinion
IMHO = In My Humble Opinion

Schools start in Sep on the Tuesday following the 1st Monday. Prior to that you have to get your crediantials evaluated and appear for some test. These I think ahappen in August. So July would be ideal. That way it gives you time to settle down.

A1. You can register him for Kindergarten in the nearest Elementary school. Depending upon his date of birth, he will be enrolled for Jr. or Sr. KG, but the in practise the classroom & teacher is mostly the same. There is no choice, you have to go to the Elementary school which services your area/address. If you wish to change to a different school based on others recommendations, you will have to reside in that area. Registration generally starts in August, but you can enroll anytime after that. Unlike India there is no standing in the queue or interview or donations etc...

A2. The only documents required are age proof and address proof. There is no admission criteria, every child has right to Basic education and no school can deny him admission based on eligibility. The only eligibity required is to reside in the area serviced by that school.

A3. There are no fees associated with tuition. However, you should expect some small expenses for ocassional field trips, fund raisers..etc... If the school is more than 1 Km of residence, school bus service is also available free of cost. Kindergarten is generally 2 hours, Monday to Friday- either in morning (9.00 am to 11.00 am) or in the afternoon (1.00-3.00 pm).

All this info is for public schools only. I have no experience with private or Catholic schools.

Hope this helps.

All the best.

Hiren
