Private schools are elitist. When both the parents are busy minting money, the private school comes into play. If you have the time for your child and have the inclination to look into his / her everyday welfare, public schools are fine. The key is to identify a good public school from Fraser and try to locate within that school. My understanding and this what quite a few people say is the French immersion schools are much more academically inclined than the English public schools.

Hi,
I'm so very confused and need advice from parents of school going kids. Are Private schools better than public schools? What is the advantage of spending so much (your hard earned money) on Private schools, are they really worth it? If a parent can afford will they be sending kids to private schools?
What is the Desi community of Canada doing, Indians in general don't mind to spend on kid’s education even it means tight budgets. Is there any big difference in the type of education kids get in Private compared to Public? Or its just parent’s prestige in sending kids to Private?
Thanks..................Jona

There is a big difference in private and public schools and my wife being a teacher with experience in both kinds of schools I have had some knowledge about it.
Sending a child to a private or public school is not only based on fee you pay for private schools, but a lot of other factors too, including and not limited to your own status in society, what kind of persons you want your children to mix with, your view about accountability, attention you want for a child from his/her teacher etc.
Going to a private school has both advantages and disadvantages. The obvious disadvantage is that since majority of the students come from well to do families, there are chances of a child becoming snobbish. Another problem is that a child gets stuck to use of 'branded' things only since most students can afford that.
Advantages are that you have better accountability in private schools, better facilties, better teachers usually and the schools focus on overall development of a child. Being surrounded by children from well to do families, a child learns to think big and that helps a lot in career development. As parents, they also meet other parents and develop friendships which lead to lots of other benefits too (material and non material) - like I would definitely like to be assoicated more with those parents who are at high positions in life, enjoy the finer things of life like theater, fashions, great resturents, yoga, cottage week-ends etc. etc. rather that with parents who are only trying to make ends meet and can not find time to develop as human beings.
I personally would have liked to send my children to private schools if I could afford it in Canada!
