I think I saw an Acer laptop matching your needs (don't remember the RAM. It was a 250G HD) in Costco last weekend. With rebate at $650 or so.

Looking to buy a laptop
To continue this thread....
I am looking to buy a laptop with the same specifications as above except that I am looking for a 250Mb Hard disk + attached / inbuilt webcam.
Best buy in USA sells Dell with the above specification for $699+ Local NY State tax. Once I order it online, I can pick it up at a US Best buy store.
(On a side note, the same is availabe in Canada for $799 + 13% tax).
The main note of this post is to find which brand is the best.
What would CD's rate as the best :
1. Dell
2. Toshiba
3. Sony
4. Acer
5. HP
6. Compaq
7. IBM Lenovo Thinkpad.

(on a personal note, I am thinking that Dell and IBM Lenovo is the best)

Replied appricated

Peace

250GB you mean?? Why do you want to go for built-in webcam? It is a nice scam. It is inconvenient...at best. Get an external cam that you can move around. With a baby for example or if you want to show your home etc, the fixed cam is a bit of a hassle. Think about it. These days most laptops come with built in webcams but don't make that your buying criteria. Here's what I think is important:

1. Memory - To support a garbage OS like Vista which is a memory hog, you might want to consider 3GB or more.
2. Hard disk - 250GB maybe enough. But if you are into multimedia(digital photography, ripping and/or downloading movies etc), you will be surprised how fast it fills up. I guess you can always get external hard drives.
3. Video memory - At least 128MB if you want quality output on your screen
4. Wireless support
5. Bluetooth/IR support - Nice to have

Bestbuy have deals on Sony ...

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10108696&logon=&langid=EN

"best" again is the relative term. Toughbooks are the Best for people in Afghanistan but I probably will hate to use on my desk.

all lapotps nowadays are ok to low quality (what else can u expect if they are priced from 500-900 with so many features)

Buy whatever you like, but buy a exteneded warranty with it bcoz u will need it.

Thanks for the inputs
Thanks for the inputs.
It is 250 GB (and not MB - A typo.).

Chittesh and Mahraj,
I am looking for a brand which generally has good quality parts and the least likelyhood of breakdown. I am looking at $699 +tax as my budget.
Also the best after service warrenty (free ones) laptops will get my nod of approval.
Sony's keyboard was too flimsy.
CD views / inputs appricated.

How does Dell and Lenovo (IBM) compare? Both are almost in the same price range and I keep hearing advt's in the Radio that Lenovo, even if thrown down / drenched with Hot coffee will still work. Is it true?

Peace

If they are running this Advt ... then I can now understand the reason behind Selling only ONLINE. I surely would have asked Sales Person for Demonstration.
