We are Canadian Citizens, living in USA for almost 2 years now and now we want to apply for NOn-Residency in Canada. We closed all of our
credit cards. No house, no dependents
Only things that has left there is

1. RRSP

2. RESP for kids (I have been told that I can still make deposits but I wouldn't get grant.

3. Life insurance Polices

I would really appreciate if someone could advice us on this. Anyone who has recently got Non-resident status?

What is the best place to look for answers?

thanks.

Thanks for quick response Pramod. On the website is says:

"Other ties that may be relevant include:

a Canadian driver's licence;
a Canadian bank account or credit cards;
health insurance with a Canadian province or territory. "

Problem is it says "MAY include." That's why I posted it here t find out if someone actually got non-residency status.

thanks again

The link I provided has all the information and takes you to other links such as Guide T -4056, Bulletin IT-221R3 and most importantly the form NR 73 which you would have to fill and send to CRA International office to let them determine you Residency (or Nor Residency) for tax purposes. Please read all the information, if you have not done so far.

The link also gives you information to elect to file tax returns or not. However, the form NR 73 would still need to be filled up and sent to CRA international office to have their opinion about your status.

I am pasting a little quote from the link;

Do you need help determining your residency status?

If you left Canada or are planning to leave Canada and need help determining your residency status, complete Form NR73, Determination of Residency Status (Leaving Canada), and send it to us as soon as possible. We will give you our opinion of your residency status based on the information you provide on Form NR73.

For more information about residency status, see Interpretation Bulletin IT-221, Determination of an Individual's Residence Status.

Good luck.

It seems u r already a NR of Canada for tax purpose. Just declare it on your tax return (by writing the departure date) when you file the cdn tax return. Make sure you do not have any bank a/cs in Canada (except RESP/RRSP that you have mentioned). I would do this rather than filing the NR-73 questionnaire and let CRA challenge it if they want.

We are cdn citizens and Non-resident of Canada.

This is what we did

1) Inform all your banks of your US address so they charge your non-resident tax rate for your interest ( you do not need to close the accts).

2) No DL, MSP etc

3) No owning or renting a house

4) Import your cars in US

5) No job etc in Canada

6) File your cdn taxes with a departure date so it becomes an emigrant tax return..

7) RRSP acounts is fine but you cannot contribute any more

We will find a way or we will make one
