I've been working since 1.5 years and since day one, all my co-workers(even from other teams) have been spying on me. In the beginning, I thought, since I'm new, its obvious. But off late, its becoming too irritating. They even come searching for me in the washroom and pantry. I used to check my personal emails from office but now I've stopped, other than that I just do my work. I spoke with one of the co-workers and he is said "yes, we are spying and that some other co-worker is doing a research on me.". He told me that he saw me using the Windows Messenger and hence. I've never used WM and dont know from where he got this idea. Previously another co-worker from our team was also spied on and he was moved to a different team. He was actually demoted. He was asked to not communicate with any of us. Does this situation sound familiar to anybody ?

I think you are just paranoid. The comments of your co worker that we are spying on you are more to pull your leg. This is what I can read from the situation you have described. Every company has its own monitoring system in place. But that would not be specific to anyone but across all employees.

If you tell us what type of a company you work for may be some one can throw more light.

Completely unheard of...these are things that make me go "WTF?!?!"

If it is indeed a fact that you are being spied, I guess you cannot find out why? I mean do you work on some ultra sensitive project from a security perspective? Can the other person who went through the same stuff share some findings if any? Speaking of which, on a lighter note, this reminds me of "Spy vs Spy" in MAD...he he he...

Never heard of such a thing. I've worked in IT consulting here as well as in-house, unless if there is something suspicious and they've been asked by the manager to do so.

Now most companies do have a policy of using the work computer for personal stuff. So if you have violated that policy, then you may be spyed upon, but again it's not the co-workers call unless they want solid proof against you to prove a point.

I do not think they need to spy you personally if you used work computer for personal work like checking email and used IM. I am not an IT/networking person but I am pretty sure everything gets recorded or logged if you are on a computer network at your workplace.
