Unfortunately, Dubai doesn't grant citizenships and I think if I am not wrong, you need to invest a hefty sum in order to obtain a permanent residece status. The latter again is easier said than done.

I was replying to Fido's statement .... if these workers would be allowed to get citizenship in Canada ..... i was not talking about citizenship in UAE

If they meet the immigration criteria ... why not ..... as for the labourers in Dubai .... the free accomodation and food you are talking about is really not what is sounds ... it might be better then the slums in India but no way is it a condition that humans should be living in. It is indeed a shame that nothing is being done about the conditions that these people by Indian govenment or international community.

A primary qualification for Canadian Immigration is English skills which these 'labor' class does not possess . So Canada politely shuts doors on them and looks for well qualified people to dthe o labor jobs .

Please check the population of India / Pakistan and the wages of these people they would have earned there . A laborer earns 4 - 5 K pm if he is well employed . Instead , if he gets to send 8K net back home it amounts to almost doubling his income ......

How much would that gate person be paid in India for waiting at the gate .... 2 - 3K ................... Masters and Bachelors apply for posts of peons in India .....

Why shd the Indian Govt intervene , an Indian IFS once told me ..... they do not get the contracts through the Government ........... yes if the contract terms are flouted then the Embassies can and do take up the cases ...........

In the end they do have a choice of returning .......... but they don't because they know that a worse future awaits them back home ............

I am not saying that the conditions are good but given their choices they get to earn more .... thats un debatable .... We all choose b/w the options we have .

lets request the Canadian Govt to open doors for these people on humanitarian ground . Yes Puttoo . :)

Let me share an experience I had when we were on holiday early this year.
The hotel we stayed in had a bell boy (a young east indian), who stood out at the entry door.
When we were having the breakfast around 7:00 am we saw him standing out with his arms folded infront of him. The hot sun was already out although at that time he was in the shade. I asked one of the waiter what was that guys job, they told me that he would help with the luggage for new customers coming in..but then I asked him why wasn't he given a stool to sit on. He replied that bell boys are supposed to stand....ok all good.
When we came for lunch this guy was still standing at the same spot....and he was at the same spot at 6:00 in the evening...that was more than 11 hours. When the boss walked in, this bell boy had to salute him but the idiot boss could not even return a smile to this boy. (the boss just pretended that he does not even care and even know him)
Just imagine standing all this time....he may have had a break but i do not know...But I was feeling uncomfortable this was slavery big time...so I went and asked him how can he stand for so long and are they paying him overtime or so..He replied no overtime his wage was $250 per month with food and accommodation provided. He has to work 6 days a week. I told him this was not good but he kept on addressing me sir sir...what to do I am supporting a family in India.
Can you imagine that he has been told to stand and no slacking...he could be fired. There is a big queue for this type of job already in India. People willing to come and work in Dubai for this meagre pay.
I thought slavery was abolished a long time but no....not in Dubai, it is still thriving there.

Just wondering if the above poster has ever gone to TD bank and has seen the poor tellers stand from 8 am to 8 pm (even the pregnant ones).

Peace

- At most in all the banks I have seen in America, tellers work that way only. It is far better than standing in Hot sun hauling huge luggage pieces.
- Most of the Doctors, hardly get any chance sit during their shifts.
- My uncle is a chemist, he spends most of his 12 hour shift standing.
- Most of the assembly workers stand through out their duty.
- Most of the Fedex, DHL etc., staffs stand through out their duty.
- I believe it is the case with elite security personnels.
- And on and on and on.....

I still have a feeling that the teller would do physically well compared to the people doing desk job hurting their back as much as they could. I am not taking the shoulder strain the tellers go through into the account though.

I dont know what you are complaining or comparing here.

First your heart froze when you came across a well qualified engineer lifting boxes for a living Canada. Now Peons in India are Masters/Bachelors.
This Masters/Bachelors Peon in India will be better off Lifting Boxes in Canada.

I am trying to say a couple of things against those who are outrightly denouncing ME deplorable conditions of laborers .

1. In India unemployment and low wages exist which lure people to come to Gulf ~ these are those people who can't come to West or elsewhere .

2. Though their conditions are not excellent when in ME - they earn more then they would in India . Hence they are better off . In some cases where they buy a Visa and have sold their land / property there s a lot of depression and suicides happen . But suicides happen in India too .

3. Exploitation exists everywhere including your truly Canada where you find well qualified engineers working as salesmen / janitors / laborers ...... for the lack of 'Canadian experience ' . Lets not get swayed by Canadian Immigration ..... they didn't do it for a charity . Canada has a dwindling population to which this enormous country would have succumbed to had it not been for Immigration . They need people and by offering a scanned policy they get professionals who have worked hard and risen at the cost of their own countries .

Sadly Dubai / ME does not provide permanence , hence loses a lot of professionals to Can / Aus ........... but the same option does not exist for laborers .
