My PC has only 256 MB RAM. I want to upgrade to higher one.
But it has SDRAM & not DDR or DDR2 RAM

I know getting SDRAM is difficult & also costly

Can anyone suggest me where I should buy SDRAM atleast 512MB

If shops are in Alberta , well & good
If not, can I buy Online

Thanks

Please try following. Although I am not sure about the stores in Alberta:

Reasonable prices and the best quality(online): http://www.crucial.com/

Based in Vancouver, but can buy online: http://www.ncix.com/contact/

Based in Toronto, but I think you can buy online as well: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/

And, last but not the least - the very old eBay: http://www.ebay.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK

Among the above, 'ncix.com' has good prices for the memory modules. If you're going for your PC then I would recommend you to go to at least 1GB. Memory modules are inexpensive these days.

Good luck.

I think we are talking of Pentium 3 era.

First you should check how much RAM does the motherboard support and how many slots are there. If it a branded computer, you can check online by model number. For example, some motherboard will only support up to 512 MB of RAM, 256 MB each on each of two slots. If you have 128 MB installed on each, you have take out both of them and install two 256MB memory.

Some computers may have higher number of slots or higher capacity.

There are some stores where you can buy cheap RAM (usually pulled from old computers) but will not come with any guarantees. For your city, you will have to find that yourself. Some people also sell computer parts in Kijiji.ca, again without any guarantees. In my opinion, investing too much in an old P3 computer is not worth.

Rajcanada has summed it up so well, nothing much to add here.

Two years ago I bought some SD RAM from craigslist, I got it for half the price as in stores (minus the taxes).

You will see a noticeable jump in performance from 256 to 512K, but I would say rather invest in a new desktop computer, they start from just 300 dollars in stores like Canada Computers.

Edit: Holy smoke - look at this, a brand new starter desktop with 1 Gb RAM at 199.99!

Sorry for diverging from a RAM upgrade to a PC purchase; I know quite a few people who kept investing in upgrading their P3's and still struggled!

Thanks fabreet & all

For Raj - I know investing in old PC is not worth
Also my PC is Dell but assemble one

In my PC there are two slots - one already has 256 MB RAM,
and another is empty
That means I can use either 256 MB Or even 512 MB RAM in empty slot

I am getting 256 MB RAM starting at $41 while 512 MB RAM starts with $59

At present I don't want to spend & but new Desktop as it starts with $400 7 above

While buying is it better to take existing RAM with me?

I have 256MB RAM with PC-133 specifications at present

I even tried Amazon, Kiji & Kraiglist. No where its available

Thanks again

Can't help if you cannot find cheap SD RAM in your city. They are available from people who recycle computers, upgrade, computer parts store, etc. If you cannot find those and you want to upgrade, then obviously you have to buy what is available.

If you live in a major city in Alberta, you may be able to find old computers for $100 on classified sites if that appeals to you. I think you can get at least 2 MHz processor, 512 MB to 1GB RAM. It may be better than spending $60 for RAM alone.
