While I actually see the west acknowledging the rise of east and recognizing an eventuality, I see just as many desis downplaying the syndrome.
Nothing seems to please this faction of people. No matter what India does, they always seem to look India through a microscope.
So tell me something, what the bloody hell is so great about North America? Wide roads that get congested when it drizzles? What is it? Why are you all so enamored by this bloody fake part of the world that is lacking in fundamental societal values so much? How many here call North America "home sweet home"? How many here call India "home sweet home"?
Came to the US as a student to study for my Masters years ago, but never had the intention to live outside India for the rest of my life.
Graduated and moved to Canada under family pressure, regretted it big time. Thought of moving back to the US soon after, but waited for my citizenship to facilitate travel to the US and the rest of the world, and moved back to the US.
Was doing what I wanted to do in Canada as well and was making 'good money' as per the 'Canadian standards', but Canada was just not for me. Didn't like the attitude of people and lot of other things, don't want to get into that rhetoric again.
Am contemplating if I am at a stage in my career where I can go back to India. Want to do it soon though. Marriage is on the cards and once am done with that, will come up with a concrete plan to go back.
And yes, India is home....sweet home.

came to NA way back when. Graduated in the US. worked there for a while, then off to Europe, Dubai, back to Europe again then to India and again here in NA.
So like I am a global soul a la Pico Iyer.
NA, India ya Europe- it's all good. It's our world. Our planet.
Think of the song "we are the world' maybe even John Lennon's 'Imagine'.
Too much of a Walden Two but one can keep on trying.
Right now wouldn't think of living in many countries of the world though.
NA, Western Europe, Singapore, India would be my choices.Kinda limited if you think of it.
But heck, all those AC/DC concerts, Tina Turner, Madonna... a long time till India sees this on a regular basis.
The more mobility(thru multiple citizenships) you have, the better the risk-spread in these uncertain times. While I don't plan on becoming a gypsy, I'll however keep two or three bases(If I can). This is how MNC's operate, so do the Dawoods of this world in their respective dhandas. Better if common folks like us get in the bandwgon as well.

We are all here for our own reasons. Here's mine:
I never wanted to leave my hometown in India. That's where my heart is and that's where my heart has always been and that's where I am headed back very soon. I have personal reasons due to which I have to go back. And I don't want to bring up my child in this society. I hate this society. I hope you all get the difference. I love this place...but I loathe the societal framework.
Around the time I completed my engineering, flying out west was still cool. Many of my friends came here to do their masters. All my very best friends did. I was left back with very few. I did not do well enough in my GRE/TOEFL to get into Masters and I was never good at academics anyways. So there was that peer pressure.
And unfortunately for me, my family is full of people that came here during the silicon valley boom. None of them helped me. They all were quick to give me some words of advice though. It was worth the piece of tissue in your toilet.
There was this self-inflicted stress of not making my parents proud - like others did - by going west. My parents - God bless them - never really put that much pressure on me but encouraged me to pursue what I wanted. But if only I knew what I wanted at that time. Sadly I was clueless.
All this left me in a very hopeless emotional state and so began the search for an oppurtunity that would put me with the "rest of them". Lady luck was on my side and I got a job in Toronto. I loved it! Things were all falling into place. I worked like a slave, I drank like a fish, I travelled like a nomad - life was fantastic.
Then the dot com bubble burst. I did not understand what was going on. Virtual companies? WTF? I saw my closest buddies at work lose their jobs. Soon outsourcing started. During one of my visits to California, I got a tour of the Silicon valley - tall buildings, big names, silicon graveyard. The company I worked for got bought out and the parent company gave 2 cents about the Toronto division. To avoid getting clipped, I got another job.
At this point I just want to say that I never had any of this directly affect me. I was doing swell personally. I still am. Even now with everything happening here, I still am doing fantastic.
So slowly I began to get a little disillusioned about life here. I began to miss family. When I added up what I gained and what I lost after coming to North America, I had lost everything even though superficially one would beg to disagree. I had a nice place to live. I saved enough. I had freedom. I had a car. I could buy what I want.
But after a while, life gets mechanical here. Things that I once thought were cool didn't mean much to me anymore. And the manipulative societal framework began to get to me. Fake smiles, fake advertising, fake companies...fake conservation areas. This is my favourite. Not a bunny in sight. Please don't dive into this point...but you get what I am saying?
Then I had two incidents of racism inflicted upon me. An old bag once referred to me as "you people" when I was in the company of another brownie at place where she thought we sidestepped her. Second time, an angry woman on the road yelled at me "go back to you home you f#$%ing paki".
Life goes on and we have a lovely child. Soon I start paying attention to schools, the kids outside, the type of schooling here, the curriculum, the Montessori, the public school - garbage. Effin garbage. Schooling in India is a trillion times superior. Schooling in India is "schooling". They do school you...in more ways than one. Not here. Your hands are tied, the school gives a damn.
Meanwhile, my Motherland is doing awesome. Desis here still like to bitch about how bad India is...but they can eat you know what for all I care.
I don't know how some came to conclusion that I hate Canada. I don't. But in North American in general, things are not what they seem. There's always a caveat. Personally for me, India and the Indians I know are more real than anything here.
Which is why when desis here badmouth India, it gets to me.
Anyways, I have blisters on my fingers. I didn't need to tell you my story but I have. I hope this gives you some insight...
Generation after generation, India is getting better and better.
Please don't post a "why don't you go back" post. I am going back. Happy and content and to what is mine, my Motherland. Home sweet home.

I mean really dude..... what era are you talking of when you talk about some of the things in india? And mind you, your list should be titled: Why TK likes North America....
You mean to tell me that there's no pollution in NA? Of course there is...
There's no Caste system but there's RACISM; I don't see much difference as we brown skin people are treated like second class people here....
I don't know how you used to dress up in India but my family and many millions of others in india are well dressed, speak very good and CORRECT English, are fragrant, act very decently; May be you didn't do all this?
You talk about CULTURE, there's no culture in NA which is why all the North Americans are always looking to Indians and other asians for meaning of life.
Free English schools is such a great charm to you, I'm sure there are free school in India but not English coz our national language is HINDI not ENGLISH! What is so wrong about being fluent in HINDI?
Like Maharaj pointed out, FREE is NOT FREE... WE ARE ALL PAYING for it!
How the heck does conversion rate come into play.. you live in CANADA, you earn CANADIAN Dollars, you spend CANADIAN Dollars in CANADA... what conversion rate?
You talk so much about FREE FREE FREE... you don't realize that we pay so much tax and that's why this is all FREE...
India has good roads and good vehicles, highways are being built left and right and there's actually the concept of people just going for DRIVES...
People in India are coming up much higher and at a faster rate than Indians here; all of them own homes, have cars, maids, eat and live well, what more is needed? What of this do you have here?
Intelligent work space? Ok dude, what do u think is happening in the Microsoft campus and other big companies in India; all call center calls we get are from India, everthing is going to INDIA.. so what intelligence are you referring to?
The stigmas you discuss exist here as well, you probably don't see them.. turn on the news and u'll see....
again you talk of FREE and hand outs; these are not good enough to live on my friend.. and again like Maharaj pointed out, we are paying for all this through the nose.. I don't know about you but i don't like to see my hard earned money taken away in such high taxes so that lazy folks can get FREE stuff... besides, I don't think that handouts and free stuff are the way to live!
I don't know why you say there's no need to worry about your children after age 16.. it's' ur child and hence your constant worry! I feel bad for your child and what will happen once it turns 16!
DOWRY.. what the F#%$@ Will you ever get off the dowry band wagon?...
STATUS SYMBOL? what status symbol do we have here? we are all second class citizens!
I guess finally in india you used to eat crap and not nice food?
TK, no offense but your posts make it seem like all you think and know of India is that it's some crappy village.. you complain that India is not represented in a good light and yet look at what you think of India? How can you even think along such lines? Yes, Indian villages are not in good shape but neither are small towns in NA... GOD, you really need to go see some real Indian cities...and your facts are a few decades behind where INDIA is today!
To the original poster: I agree that India is always looked at under the microscope but you shouldn't care... some people will never be satisfied and if you think highly of India then start a thread to state that and don't worry about NA.... people leave India and come here for many reasons and what's more upsetting is those who live here and constantly bash up NA...and like others i always ask as well.. if you hate is so f^^%%G much, why are you here? BOTTOM LINE, some people just love to complain and will find anything under the sun to complain about and if nothing will complain about the fact that why is everything good and there's nothing to complain about ! ! !

GuptaMik,
You misunderstood my post. Go and read it again. No way am I glorifying / condoning Canada or India.
I just listed the reason why people from India come to NA. Every desi in NA, will fall under that catagory.
Let me explain :
