Hai TK
How are you? Hope all of you are doing fine. I got my visa grant letter from Australia yesterday. The whole process took less than 10 months.
I have to thank your cousin Sam and friend Preetham whose mails were encouraging to apply for Australia.
As you know, Qatar is also a nice place and i have a very cool job with salary of usd 6000 p.m., i live in a nice 3BR villa just opposite to DPS school where my both kids are schooling. My wife also works as Maths Teacher there. Life is happy and easy going here. however i think Australia can offer much better quality life and education to kids.
I have briefly gone thru some web pages, the unemployment in Australia has increased from 2 to 7%?. I am bit worried to resign from the current job, go to Australia and start looking for a new job. I prefer to wait in doha until i get a suitable job oppertunity there. Is it practical to look for a job in Australia from Qatar?
What is the average cost of living for a family of four in Sydney, Melboure and Perth? How much salary is OK for a decent life? What are the opportunities for mechanical engineers? Can you please put me across your friends who can guide me for a smooth landing in Australia.
I need to make first entry before March 2010. So I am also planning the first entry in Aug 2009 with my family for a week vacation. any suggestions for a nice vacation?
I will be visiting India in mid july.
bye for now

Hello CD's,
Just wanted to share a mail from a friend in the ME who applied to Australia How long does it take to get immigration to Canada from the ME.
On a related note : Is it possible for me (a Cdn. Citizen w/ OCI) to apply for immigration to Australia and retain all the 3 status Viz : Cdn. passport, OCI, PR of Australia and subsequent Passport of Australia. I think that I could be in Australia during Cdn. winter and get the social benefits of both Canada and Australia (strictly legally).

Hey TK,
The grass is always greener on the other side of the mountain, moreover haven't you read of the student from Andhra fighting for his life after being beaten up by some racist aussies. If you think racism exists in Canada you need to experience it down under.

Quote:Sure I don't know about Down Under, but there are very few benefits (if any) that you will be eligible for in Canada if you aren't living here.

The pass mark is not easy to attain. Currently for Skilled – Independent the pass mark is 120. For that you need to be a specialist occupation. The new changes that the Canadian govt has made to its skilled migration are based on the Australian system.
For example, Just been in IT is not sufficient. You have to have specialized in certain areas (the list is continually updated) so sometimes network engineers maybe in demand; sometimes they are removed. At that time, Java programmers maybe be added.
Also your skills are accessed by the relevant regulatory body - so in IT that would be the Australian Computer Society. They will also check on your work references.
If you don't get sufficient points, you could get an employer to sponsor you or go for the regional visa (you have to live in that state for some years). That of course, excludes most of NSW (Sydney) or Victoria (Melbourne).
In terms of living on average, you pay slightly more taxes than Canada; rent is more expensive in Sydney, Melbourne than similar Canadian cities. Food, Clothes etc is also around 10% to 20% more expensive. That said, jobs tend to pay more than here. There are many immigrants going through the same issues - lack of local experience, discrimination etc who end up working in security, labour jobs etc. Many foreign students with Australian degrees who can’t get jobs work drive taxis as it’s very lucrative.
In terms of buying houses/condos, compared to Canada they are far more expensive. Canada seems cheap by comparison. Also you need a far higher down payment and interest rates are not as low as they are here.
Immigration for family members (for eg, parents) is extremely difficult due to many barriers and there is a huge queue.
Weather is great; Also closer to India compared to Canada.
Quote:I expect that you (or anyone else, for that matter) will have tough time getting jobs for 6 months at a time.

As said before, I was thinking of 6 months here and 6 months in Australia.
How about :
Medical benefits (I will keep 183 days residency in Ontario)-OHIP
GST/PST credit (as I will not be working and my income will be $ 0)
Child Tax benefits 9Children will be here for 183 days a year or 178 days a year)
National Child tax benefit
Ontario child tax benefit
Other social programs that are funded and given by the govt. for people (legally)
