Yes, companies are on a hiring spree in India, especially IT, ITES, Banks & Fin companies, and the pay structures are also mind boggling. During my recent visit to India, I touched base with my friends and x-collegues in various IT Consulting firms, and yes, salaries have gone up like anything, however keep the following things in mind before you jump to any conclusion:
-You are expected to work from 9 to 9, leaving at 5 or 6 PM is frowned upon. There is a lot of strees and pressure. The companies are not going to pay you big money just for the heck of it. If they give you 2 lacs a month, they will extract work value of 50 lacs from you, so its not that easy.
- Everything is target oriented, failing to meet your targets leads to termination. Remember, you dont have any \"EI\" to fall back on!! I know of people joining the private banks from nationalised banks because of the money, and then losing their jobs because they couldnt keep up with the work pressure/targets. Same with ITES/IT Consulting firms.
-Corruption & Pollution (with P in caps). This time the worst thing that I faced was pollution, specially in the cities like Delhi and Calcutta.
-Driving was a nightmare in the cities. The first day, I tried to drive like I drive here, but since nobody gave a s**t about the road rules, so I switched back to my Indian driving mode
-Inflation.......everything is expensive, prices are going north rapidly, including basic food prices.
That's how it is in India now, take it or leave it

That's right. Things are looking up well with India Inc. Big players in IT and ITES are hiring. MAY BE its better for willing NRIs in US to pack up and move rather than wasting their time and energy on contract jobs.

Good comments Sumjo...
All of them very true. I recently came back from a trip to India and noticed the following:
1) Yes pay packages are high but most people have no life..they cannot indulge in their hobbies and have no balance in their life.
2) The coffee shop culture has caught on and Barista is a huge hit...it is always packed and the prices are high....Rs 100 plus for a cup of coffee. But still no place to sit.
3) Generally the younger generation has sky high expectations and want to live a lavish lifestyle without putting in the effort...short cuts for everything.
A genuine question:
The US technically is coming out of a recession (there are others who still question this). The average unemployment rate is around 10 %. Protectionism is on the horizon, and there is a large sentiment against jobs being shipped overseas.
Australia and Japan are not in a good shape either - economy wise.
Much of Europe is still a recession, with still unemployment still at a historic high.
If I understand right, much of the software is developed in India for the US, Canada, Europe, Japan, and Australia. If these economies are still in recovery, how come these companies are on a hiring spree?
Just curious if this is just hype (there is of course, no way to verify the hiring that these companies claim)....

Just curious. Has anyone seen the paystub of someone making Rs. 2 lakh a month? Is it CTC (cost to the company) / gross pay / net pay? Lot of desis tend to blow everything out of proportion to maintain the bloated ego. Marriages have gone kaput when the girl finds that the salary the guy mentioned was CTC, not the take home pay. Its not the boy's fault, its the parents who tell the BS.
In countires like US / Japan / Aussie, things have to move on despite the economy. Companies cant shut door. To cut costs, they ship jobs offshore. Some of my close friends set up and ran small IT companies on their own. Has the big three IT firms revealed their attrition rate? They hire thousands becuase their attrition rates are in double digits. They are, more or less replacing the staff, not adding thousands to the existing staff. They hire entry levels more so that they can be paid less with the promise of assignment (client site) abroad. Who does not want an assignment abroad?
