This is a typical desi style talk which goes on in Canada.

If you have been able to get out of this cycle then you are GRRRRRRRRRRReat!.

I'm also part of the same cycle.

There are two types of cycles one a Punjabi Cycle and others.
-------------------------------------------------------------

1.Others(people from other parts of India):

They have 20 yrs of top management experience in India, he is a BTECH, MBA while his wife is Post Graduate working in a MNC in India. The total income for their family in INR is Rs.50Lakh and still we want to immigrate to Canada as it offer good educational opportunity for our children.

They immigrate to Canada from India. They immediately find that no homework ever comes home; while their counterpart kids in India are slogging hours endless doing homework and also doing other courses.

The kid slowly loses interest in sciences, maths and other technology related courses. Somehow by hook or crook the kid reaches university either in Life Sciences or some course like Police Foundation or Physiotheraphy degree.

The parents thought that their kids will do more and go onto Princeton, Harvard or Caltech and attain a name for themselves.

While the kids struggle through Grade 12 Calculus or Physics and somehow make it to University and some of them end up in Computer Science in Waterloo. Then the race starts and kids are not able to match up to the counter parts from India and hence start crying and then eventually go to some softer option.

The girls usually end up doing life sciences and then go onto a Health Science course and end up working for a NGO or a settlement service or some form of business that may be typically Insurance, Bank or mortgage business.

The parents thought that their children will invent the next USB or the next IPAD while the kids want to do their 40 hours make about 40K per year and live in a downtown loft and party on fridays. They do not want to go back to India.

While their counterpart kid who never left India goes onto IIT and then to Stanford and is a Assistant Professor in a State University in USA.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2.Typical Punjabi kid:

The family has immigrated from Punjab and they have never seen Jallandhar and their next destination outside their village in Punjab is Toronto.

The father either works as a truck driver or a taxi driver while their mom works in a factory doing labour job.

The kid does not have any help at home for education. The kid realizes early that it cannot go onto university and looks around for a practical money making course.

If it is a girl the kid usually goes onto do a course like dental assistant, physiotheraphy assistant, beautician or some course and start working right out of school making 20 bucks an hour. The kid initially does part time and later on goes onto make a fulltime job and ends up making 50K.

If it is a boy he ends up becoming a truck driver or a fork lift operator. He also becomes a parttime home renovator. He starts making 100K the next 5 years and owns a million dollar property in Brampton by his 30's.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do not know who the hare is and the tortoise is in this story.

I agree of the life cycle of 1st generation of immigrants

but what about the life cycle of parents (immigrants) after say 20 years in Canada

Punjabi Cycle

Both parents have at-least divorced once and are remarried and now have blended families, divorce happens after many visits by police for domestic dispute.
Father has a small business(no GST PST) which is completely dependent on Cheap immigrant labor to make profit.

Smoking weed, alcohol, and depression is all part in the family, and father thinks he is more white than other Indian.
If parents have never divorced then they also own a house in India which they visit in winters

-------------------------------

Normal Cycle

Both parents have at-least divorced once and remarried and now have blended families.

Father has risen to become big manager and only next to the owner of firm.
Alcohol, and depression is all part in the family, and father always finds reason to prove immigration to Canada was a better decision.

If parents have never divorced then they also own a house in India which they visit in winters

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Parents wants to get involved with marriage decisions of their kids, but are left out

Both the cycle sit back and enjoy only Indian TV program every day and deep in their heart always miss India.

============================

Please save your precious time by knowing that yes there are exceptions among all of us.

VM has made very important observation. Most of CDs who are professionally qualified came here to ensure that the kids get very good education. That was one of the prime motives. However, having come here we realize that it was a wrong decision. Now again at which age kids migrate here is important factor. Honestly, I would not blame the kids for their failure to study or secure very good jobs as outlined by VM. Kids are overwhelmed by new culture, method of study and influenced by the friends and colleagues. Parents, having realized that they have been cheated, are struggling to find job and requalifying and perhaps have less time to devote to the study of their kids. Many a times kids with impressionable age lose respect for their parents to find good job. Further they are exposed to gang violence in school and are intimidated (depends which school and which are one lives) or feel conflicted with their cultural values at home and that of Canadian culture. There is tremendous peer pressure to get in to dating scene and moral values espoused by the parents. Such confusion leads to under performance.

As regards Punjabi kids making good life, it raises the broader question. It is well known that since last decade, North America has surrendered its manufacturing to China and technology to Japan, Germany and to a very small extent to China and India. Instead of this trend reversing, its accelerating. This has resulted in fewer opportunities for better jobs for qualified people directly affecting prospects of students graduating in North America. Canada, with its vast natural resources and small population would survive and perhaps prosper. USA with its vast natural resources and high dollar and its ability to draw the best professionals would also survive. So long as currency of both the countries are high, construction, trucking and other jobs like plumbing, machine operation , Fork lifting and ticket collector jobs will keep paying better than accounting and clerical jobs. However, the danger to both the countries would come form China with its tremendous surpluses and if it succeeds in making its currency a substitute for US dollar, the scenario would change as China now commands leadership in Africa, Asia and important Latin American country like Brazil which practically work as its subsidiary. Even Venezuela, Bolivia and other Latin American countries are under complete command of China. Arabian countries like Iran are obligated to China. If China takes leadership, it will be disaster for North America. With Obama at helm, in not too distant future that is a distinct possibility and then all hell will break loose. The present GDP of the North American and European counties is high because of higher currency value. For example, A bank clerk drawing $50,000 equivalent to Rs. 2,000,000.00 to GDP. Similarly a nurse drawing $100,000 contributes Rs 4,000,000 and TTC Collector drawing $100,000 contributes Rs. 4,000,000 to GDP. Similar services in India or China would be priced much lower. When this advantage evaporates, we will be all in trouble in North America.
