It seems the Indian Consulates are charging $175 to stamp the passport as cancelled. Our passports have a cancelled stamp. So I 'hope' and 'wish' that their are no issues for people who are OCI holders with a cancelled stamp on their passports.

Technically, they are charging $175 for the surrender cert. In any case, it's a scam. Anyway, I checked out the surrender cert from the consulate website (Chicago). It's a one page paper with top 2/3rds stating you have acquired foreign citizenship and the bottom 1/3rd is the surrender certificate that would supposedly be attested by the consulate. I was hoping for a nice looking piece of document for the $175....but not even that.....

I am in the same boat as you. The question is, will we still need to get that 'Surrender certificate' even after having our Indian passport stamped cancelled?
1) Personally, more than the money, its having to see the sullen and wasteful
faces of the CGI staff (yet again!!) that worries me. Just when you think you have washed your hands off of them for good, THEY PUUUUULL YOUUU BAAAACK INNN (doing my best imitation of Al Pacino from GodFather-3).2) Western Societies forbid all forms of under-the-table activities; hence babus have to resort to shameless tricks like this to put a distance between you and your wallet.
Hchheda bhai, if we try the gandhi style padayatra’s, OCI staff will sue us (Canadians citizens) for copyright infringement of intellectual property from India.

There is a page on CGI New York's website regarding renunication of Indian citizenship. Have a look at the insane amount of fees they are charging people. This is nothing but a cash grab.

....And I wouldn't be surprised if you are required to pay 1.5 times US$ fees if you wish to make payment in C$...

some Desi folks in the US have contacted the Indian consulate in the US and were advised that even those who already have OCI should obtain the surrender certificate to avail future services at the consulate.
if you want to avail future services at the consulate you need this cancellation certificate otherwise you are all set.
