"Inaugurating the ninth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas here Saturday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the overseas citizen of India (OCI) and the person of Indian origin (PIO) cards would be merged into a single facility to simplify visa-free entry and participation of Indian diaspora in business and other activities in India."
Although it is a commendable step in the right direction, I wonder what this will mean for existing PIO card holders. Will it be a simple process to convert them to OCI Cards? Will existing PIO cards continue to be valid until their expiry? There are going to be a lot of questions as they finalize the details.

How exactly is having one choice instead of two a commendable step?
Many people dont want OCI, all that was needed was a long term or life long visa. Why make them go through non sense of OCI procedures.
I am sure they are doing it because soon they will tie OCI to PAN cards and only then you will come to know what really was behind this non sense

You are saying "all that was needed was a life long visa". Buddy, OCI is a "life long visa". So then you are contradicting yourself. By the way, it is great of our native country to offer one, which other country offers a life long visa??
If you are so interested in acquiring a visa every time, you can go get an entry visa every 5 years.
Although it is hypothetical, there is nothing wrong with linking OCI to PAN if it were to ever happen. If you make income in a country, you got to pay your fair share of taxes too.
If one is not happy with oci/pio merging, they can continue to be overseas citizens instead of questioning rules and regulations set by India.
People born in India learn to respect rules of the country when they migrate to other country but fail to respect the rules set by mother land.
Shame.
All simple things are being made more complex, confusing and cumbersome. I only wish it becomes a streamlined process and not as messy as they announced surrender certificate.
