AHMEDABAD: Beginning his 'sadbhavna' fast, chief minister Narendra Modi made eager attempts to extend an olive branch to the Muslim community, aggrieved by the 2002 Gujarat communal riots.

"If any part of the body is weak, the entire body cannot be termed as healthy. Similarly, if any community is weak in the state, it cannot be considered as a developed state," said Modi who began his three-day Sadbhavna fast for peace, unity and harmony at the Gujarat University convention centre in Ahmedabad on Saturday. The event coincided with his 61st birthday.

The mood was jubilant as people thronged the hall with a capacity of 7,000. Chants of Allahu akbar merged and reverberated with Sanskrit shlokas as Modi started the fast at 10.30am.

Members of the Muslim community, many of whom were shouting slogans in support of the chief minister, were seen in large numbers at the venue. BJP stalwarts, including LK Advani, Arun Jaitley, Ravi Shanker Prasad, former BJP president Rajnath Singh and Mukhtar Abas Naqvi were also present. Rajya Sabha member and TV star Smriti 'Tulsi' Irani added the glamour quotient. AIADMK leader M Thambidurai, leader in the Lok Sabha and his counterpart at the Rajya Sabha V Maitreyan were also present.

Apart from office bearers of the BJP, chief minister from Punjab Prakash Singh Badal, Himachal Pradesh chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal flew into the city.

On the eve of the fast, Modi had issued a statement which was interpreted as his first sign of regret over the 2002 post-Godhra communal violence. "Constitution of India is supreme for us. As a chief minister of the state, pain of anybody is my pain. Justice to everyone is the duty of the state," Modi had said on Friday.

On Saturday, in his speech, Modi claimed that his government had tried to bring normalcy in the state in 2002. "Innocent people were killed, atmosphere was tense and emotions were running high. The wounds were deep and people said that Gujarat cannot develop now. But people have forgotten the past and development is now the mantra," he said.

He began his speech with a reference to the earthquake in 2001 and then went on to talk about the 2002 riots, the Akshardham attack and even the 2008 blasts in Ahmedabad and added that each time the state rose from the ashes.

Choosing not to directly attack the Congress, Modi said critics had been hurling stones at him and he took them in his stride to save the people of Gujarat. "I gathered these stones and used them to make a ladder of the development for the state."

There was a minor short-circuit when Badal stood up to speak, disrupting the sound. Badal said that in each chief ministers' conference, all eyes were on Narendra Modi "who has always shown path to the people of the country."

Advani said that Gujarat is the only state which had achieved a growth of 11 per cent. "All the NDA ruled stated are examples of good governance and Gujarat was showing the results of being a corruption-free state."

Modi has always been proactive... only thing political leaders hammered him... even his own party. But now everyone has realised that it Modi for 2014 or even earlier... look the new alignments... Even Jayalatitha is coming over during Modi's fast. US has also realised it is Modi for PM.. wait and see how they change their colours (they have already someway endorsed Modi) and lay out the red carpet for him.

GO MODI GO.....

Mr. Modi seems to be a person, with his feet firmly planted on the ground. Unlike many other politicians, he knows that a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. That was why he was able to realize the true value of his CM post and do so much good to the people of his state. But his detractors all the time depict as if he is a plotting and scheming person. If he coughs, they say he was doing with an eye on Prime Ministership, if he sneezes that he wants to shift to Delhi.
The slant and bias shown by the english news media on the coverage of Narendra Modi can be exceeded only by them. Compare with their total non-coverage of Sonia Gandhi and her family even though she was responsible for several of Congress party's corruption in central government.

Modi G need not worry about the english news media .... he has to worry about opposition from within his own house.... http://www.samachar.com/Dwindling-Sadbhavna-Sangh-snaps-at-Miyan-Modi-ljtfRLhfhdc.html.

It seems this sadbhavna thingy has not gone well with the "Parivar" ..... but he should stick to his path !!!!

Now the ROP folks want Modi to APPEASE them.

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi refused to put on a 'skull cap' offered by a Muslim cleric during his sadbhavana fast in Ahmedabad.

Sayed Imam Shahi Saiyed, a cleric of a small Dargah in Pirana village on the outskirts of the city (he lives in Savali village of Dakor taluka), had on Sunday gone up to stage to greet the chief minister, at Gujarat University Convention hall.

He offered Narendra Modi a 'skull cap', but Modi politely refused to wear it, asking him to offer a shawl instead. The imam did so, and Modi was seen accepting it.

"Narendra Modi's refusal to accept the cap is not my insult but an insult of Islam," Saiyed told reporters.

"I had come to Ahmedabad after hearing about the Sadbhavna Mission fast and went to the stage to felicitate Modi.

"When I offered him the cap he told me that he would not wear it. He might have thought that wearing a skull cap will dent his image...," the cleric said.

The BJP, however, said it was a non-issue. "Narendra Modi has clearly said that his policy is not of appeasement of a section of society unlike other parties, but our approach is development for all and treating everyone as equal," party spokesperson Vijay Rupani said.

"Thousands of members of the minority community have come here, but nobody insisted that Narendra Modi put on a skull cap. This is a non-issue which is being turned into a big one by our opponents," Rupani said.

Sachar Commission (equal opportunity of all, not just a favored minority) and 60 years wasted ... Read it all.

see this Excerpt

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi ended his three-day fast with a speech focused on the “nation” this evening, exhorting India to “dream like Gujarat”, and committing his “life, mind, body and heart” to the service of the country.

“It is often said that India does not dream big and that is the root cause of all our problems. Why can’t we dream like China, Europe or America? Sapne hi nahin hain to sankalp kaise hoga, aur sankalp nahin to jodne ki ichchha kaise hogi? (How can there be resolve without dreams, and from where will the impetus for unity come without resolve?)” Modi asked.

“The country needs to dream like Gujarat.”

He wanted Gujarat to develop for the sake of India’s development, the chief minister said. “I am not satisfied yet... I want to take Gujarat to newer heights... I wish to show the world the strength that drives Gujarat.”

“Rashtraneeti”, Modi said, is above “rajneeti” — “We wasted 60 years during which nearly every government worked with the objective of winning the next election... Gujarat has come out of this in the last decade.”

His government, Modi said, did nothing specifically for either the majority or the minority — it always worked for all the people of Gujarat. “The Sachar Commission asked me, ‘What do you do for the minorities?’ I said ‘Nothing. Nor do I do anything for the majority. Whatever I do is for the 6 crore people of the state; I believe in equal development for all’
