Has any1 purchased electronics in the Middle East and taken over 2 Canada ?? . If yes has it been cost effective ?

Talking about Television + washing machine + fridge + DVD player +Music System +PC . Will it b cheaper 2 carry from here after using or buying there . On an average a
21' JVC TV costs here C$200/-
VCR C$80/-
Samsung 5 kg w/m C$250/- .
Hitachi 170l fridge C$ 210/-

How much do these cost @ lets say Walmart . I assume it mst b very competitive .

How much wud b the approx transportation cost 4 the abovementioned articles from ME 2 Toranto in case any1 has done it b4?

Is Prima as a TV Brand available there ?

Regards,
Manasvi

Hi,
Walmart is competitive, but only against the canadian market. The product costs you have described, are good prices, but in the similiar range you will find products over here too, "Futureshop" is a good retailer and has very good prices (look for the discounted prices cycle where futureshop offers upto 40% less for their products for some days each 6-8weeks).
It will be very expensive for you to take this stuff to Toronto. I myself disposed off all the stuff before moving to Toronto. Plus, the voltage system here is 110 Volts and not 220 V like the Middle East. And also your video and TV might not support the different video System (NTSC) here

I bought the Prima Television 21" from Future Shop last year in August for 149 Dollars (I am not marketing their products here but just giving you an idea).
Do keep one thing in mind.....Telephone sets are real cheap in the middle east...so bring your existing one with you as a good telephone set in toronto (cordless, panasonic) starts from 150 Dollars and up. I sold my set for peanuts b4 coming to Toronto and then spent another 225 bucks here to get a similiar one. You will just need a 9VDC 110 V AC Adaptor which you can buy here from the local flea market for 5 Dollars.
And you can always go for refurbished stuff too in Toronto from Stores like http://www.factorydirect.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK, http://www.xscargo.com" rel="nofollow">LINK, etc.
If you can, bring your beddings (comfortors, bedsheets, pillows) with you (if you have space in the cargo). This stuff is quite expensive in Walmart too as compared to the ME. And plus they do not need any convertors...:-)
Remember that each product advertised here does not include the 15% Tax which you have to add to the advertised price....So if you are buying something for 1000 Dollars.....just add 150 Dollars tax to it....that is around 400 Dhs TaX! :( .

Sorry I forgot this information, so here it is...

You can check the prices at http://www.futureshop.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK

I bought a DVD player which reads any and all types of DVDS....for 50 dollars, and it is working fine since one year. Branded DVD players usually do not run copied software.

If your PC is new......Perhaps Pentium IV 1.5 Ghz Plus, bring it along with you......check on the back of the power supply if it supports 110 V....normally new systems have these switchable 110 / 220 power supplies. Dispose ofF the monitor in ME and dont bring it with you. You can get one here from Futuredirect in very good conditions as used ones. I bought a 17 " IBM Monitor for 75 Dollars (1 year used) and its working great....

I cant tell you much about the sound system.....I did not buy one in Canada.

Well, I also emigrated from the Middle East. Electronics items available in Canada are of very poor quality wise, maximum stuff is made in China. Secondly all video devices available here designed only for one color system i.e NTSC whereas you can have multi system devices from the Middle East. Voltage should not be a concern as all video devices (available through out the world) are designed to work from 110v to 240 v.

Ultimately choice is yours.:)

Thanks and regards.

One of the biggest things to consider is - whether or not you have any personal videos - could range from your wedding video to children's shots to personal holidays - which are purely personal and most probably shot in PAL format.

If such be the case - converting PAL into NTSC (for viewing on local videos and TVs) can be a big cost if you have quite a few videos like me (more than 10 would perhaps be a cost-benefit cut off point). As biomed has rightly put - all electronic stuff bought in that part of the world would have dual voltage capability - some auto (like latops and VCRs) while others having switches (like Amplifiers, cassette decks)

I brought into Canada everything - except a TV - and repented not bringing a multisystem TV because I had to buy it at almost 70% extra cost locally, and four times the price at which I had disposed off my 1 year old 29" TV back home!

But what you will perhaps have to calculate is the cost of bringing your things - if you intend to bring a container full (or even half), there might be a benefit at bringing whatever you can, even if you have to buy some things new (a good, not great, mattress alone can cost about C$1000 here)

Thanks a Ton Faisal , Biomed & Chandresh :p ,

That brings some intersting facts 2 light which can help prospective Imigrants and summed as follows

1. Check electronics range of voltage(110v) and color systems (NTSC) when thinking of getting them 2 Canada . TVs here in ME support multi system & voltages
Q - Do u think VCRs are passe now that VCD / DVDs are here ?

2. Confirm whether all appliances that u think of bringing are capable of running @ 110 volts (repeat) ??
Q - Suppose I have a fridge running on 220 V . How much wud a converting device cost in Canada & is it feasible ??

3. Get ur beddings / mattresses / comforters / blankets & not 2 4get --telephones .
Q - Wud GSM 900/1800 cellphones work in Canada??

4. I think the prices are competitive in Canada and ME .(PRIMA 21' -- C$150/- here exactly under promo) but cant comment abt quality . Plus if u purchase n Canada u avail the warranty as well.

5. Generally Apartments in Canada come furnished with cookers / washing machines / refrederators as default . So think abt that b4 bringing anything over .
Q - R these provided by default or is that optional ??

6. Calculate ur cost / benefit by comparing the (cumulative prices in Canada ) - (Resale value ur getting ) - ( Cost of transport ) . Not mentioning the depreciation though but thats 2 b borne in mind .

I will check and post the freight costs 4m ME 2 Toranto soon .

Regds ,
Manasvi

Q - Do u think VCRs are passe now that VCD / DVDs are here ?

DVDs produced in Canada might not work in ME DVD players....unless the DVD player specifies that it can read all regional formats.....something to stop piracy.

Q - Suppose I have a fridge running on 220 V . How much wud a converting device cost in Canada & is it feasible ??

Such a device would cost you 5 Dollars from Brampton Flea Market. From Radio Shack it will cost you 55 Dollars + Tax

Q - Wud GSM 900/1800 cellphones work in Canada??
In the US and Canada I think GSM 1900 is the frequency system used for cell phones. So if you havea "tri band" Cell phone or a cell phone which specifies 1900, it will work in Canada. Again you should confirm it with your local phone shop as they have more info abt these compatibility issues.

5. Generally Apartments in Canada come furnished with cookers / washing machines / refrederators as default . So think abt that b4 bringing anything over .
Q - R these provided by default or is that optional ??

If you are buying a house, these are optional, if you are renting it, these utensils are there by default in the rent price, you need it or don't they will charge you for it.

Please keep in mind that if you have to store your stuff somewhere till you settle down in Canada, you will have to pay for that. A friend of mine brought all his household and stored it in a warehouse for 1 year till he settled down in his new home. He paid almost 2700 Dollars for the storage and transportation costs....

The more stuff you bring with you, the less mobile you become....
