Hello,
would my children have to face any admission tests to join Regular public school Grade 2 in Calgary?

How will they be assessed ---- they are not very bright students.....any tips?

Nope.
There will be no admission tests.
However there will be a very general interview where the principal will talk to your children to ascertain if they can speak english and answer some questions.

The most bad thing that can ever happen in Canadian schools is that they may recommend the child to study in a grade lower than their age, if they donot speak proper english.

However if you request / command (as per the situation), they will most likely adhere to your request.

Actually Canadian schools will welcome Immigrant children as :
1. Either the school needs to be filled up.
2. They need your taxes and hence they will be most friendly and smile and pretend as if they are helping you by admitting your children at schools.

All the best.

Peace

when they have created an infrastructure, they certainly need students.

2. They need your taxes and hence they will be most friendly and smile and pretend as if they are helping you by admitting your children at schools.

It is good. At least immigrants will have a pleasant experience rather facing with "Donation for admission" or unfair student fees.

Gurram:
Do not know your experience, but in the past 9 months, I had admitted 2 children in school and no donation was asked nor was the fees high. The children study with children from ordinary parents (like the local union leader, Auto driver, labourers working in the Gulf). There are no children who come from troubled homes (where parents drink and fight) and using bad words at school.

For higher education, the concept it clear. Study well and get good marks or end up paying capitation fees. Even in Canada, if you donot study well nor able to pay the fees , labour jobs await you.

Peace

Are you speaking from personal or others experiences or making a statement based on practices being followed in other School Boards.

Not true. I feel like screaming and saying "Stop It", please, please please don't make false statement and guide people wrongly.

TK, Just for your info. I am the PIAC (Parent Involvement Advisory Committee) Rep for TDSB Ward 20 and the Co-Chair of the Vradenburg School Advisory Council. For more details about PIAC refer to http://www.torontopiac.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK

Children are admitted as per their age. If the child is not proficient in English as per standards, they will attend ESL classes in school. In TDSB, most new immigrants first go for ESL classes and after the 1st semester, the teacher judges if the child needs to continue in ESL or not.

Not true again. Schools are built according to the needs of the community and on a on-going basis, they keep reorganizing based on the needs again. Depending on the needs schools may close too.

TK, You sound as if it running the school is a business. Yes, that's true for private schools, but this discussion is limited to Public schools.

Not true again. Do you know, if you don't earn or are in the minimum tax bracket, which means you don't pay taxes, your child IS STILL ENTITLED (and it's their right) to attend school. In fact in Ontario it's mandatory that all kids attend school until at least Grade 12. In Ontario the Min. of Education has been collecting stats about high school kids dropouts and customizing the curriculum to suit the changing and kids needs, like introducing more vocational training.

My kids have been in the TDSB school system since 1995, attended 4 different schools (between 2 kids) in different grades and I'm very pleased with the teachers. I may not be pleased with the system but that's got nothing to do with the teachers. They teach what they've been told to (and sometimes even more than that).

Need I say more .....:(

Thank you SS.
So Hamzay, that answers your question. Your children are admitted by the age and not by the knowledge of knowing English.

There is no relation between having a school going child and pay taxes to run the school. Property owners pay taxes and a part of it goes to school boards.

When my child used to go to school, I lived in rental accomodation hence never directly paid any city tax. Now I own 3 properties, paying city taxes which contribute to school boards but my child is out of school.
