Apples and oranges.

This is why statistics suck, be it Sachin's run mela or India-vs-Canada employment figures.

Most of the unemployment is among poor people. For lower middle-class and above, there are more opportunities for upward mobility. In absolute terms you may not get paid the same as in Canada, but in local currency which will take you farther than here. Most returning CD professionals would do well on employment aspect.

Even for those who find it difficult in finding employment, there are plenty of alternatives like business/trade opportunities. Of course, it is more competitive over there and you will have to be a go-getter(some say even cut-throat, I disagree) in order to succeed.

I do agree with the points you raised regarding everyday issues that we take for granted in Canada. Pollution and water availability are nightmare issues. However, infrastructure development is the next big business-industrial paradigm emerging in India.

I wouldn't count the chickens before they hatch, but I suspect India will be forced out of necessity in making improvements in efficient transportation and environmental infrastructure , even if there were no vision among the policy makers.

If it could be done, India-Canada joint venture seems like a good combination.

Unemployment is among poor people & more so in some areas of the country. whereas, there's optimum employment in middle class (both lower & upper) & above.
Here in Canada, the sad part is kind of everyone goes through the fear/reality of unemployment, than reemployment, than u/e & applying for benefits/go to school/bla bla bla.

Even if you are unemployed in India, while it is a social taboo, there is a family-friends support network that will help you through. You cannot expect this kind of support in Canada which is more EI(govt) oriented. Here, it is like a ticking taxi meter if you are unemployed. Your savings dry up in no time.

I remember 10-15-20yrs there telecommunications revolution going on in India, & now India has mind boggling cellphone usage.
Similarly, infrastructure development is coming (out of urgency) & in the next couple of years you will see the difference, & at the same time US bridges/roads are ageing & are being neglected for whatever reason (remember the Minneapolis bridge collapse).

Quebec is even worse. But on the whole, Canadian infrastructure is excellent.

Regarding the agricultural land, move out of cities, towns, & you will see the extent of agriculture, specially in non-forest areas. Metros have a chunk of population, because of the high job availability, but smaller cities have less bottleneck & more back to basics kind of lifestyle..

There are subtle signs of people, currently in very small numbers, who want to quit big cities. With improved medical and schooling facilities some towns are actually looking better than cities. Since agriculture is the next big thing, towns are closer to agricultural lands that people can buy and supervise from close proximity.

I would need at least 1 Lakh rupees per month that would cover
My 2 bed rental in a secured community.
Gas
Electricity
Grocery
School fees for two kids in an above average school.
Eating out once a week.
Medical expenses supplemental.

Based on the position I approached in the near past, my take could be any where from 1.75 to 2 Lakhs per month, when I am employed I am likely to spend little more that would leave perhaps less than 50k savings..

Now, what would I do if I am let go.

- Would I get EI ?
- Would I get any assistance to upgrade my skills to compete if I am employed longer.
- What if I fall sick, how could I afford treatment, and then family.
- Chances of having parents goes slim if you're above 40.
- Even if they are alive, they may not have savings to support your family.
- Can I ask my Brother a loan ( who would treat me different next time he meets me, I need to confront his wife), same goes with my sister and the in-laws.
- I can't work in grocery shops or any where, my credibility is going to be at big stake.
- Not easy to get into management position soon as you've lost job, Not easy to work as IC competing the college fresh / I wouldn't mind here, it is a different world.
- I wouldn't think twice to use breadbank or some charity service, my friends wouldn't let me down here but I can't even imagine flocking in front of temple for free food....
- I can't switch to 2 wheel drive from 4-wheel drive and return home late. Street dogs would literally **** me.. I tried during my vacation, I was about suffer from heart attack. :) :)

FDIs are pulling back seriously and the Forex is dipping due to trade imbalance..
Would Foreign investors continue to invest in Indian Market if they know they might get negative returns due to forex.
