I am ready for the brickbats, but being a Gujarati and having spent 70% of my life in Gujarat and among Gujaratis, I cannot completely blame a biased media. There must be a ring of truth to this issue.

Whether it is the Harshad Mehta scandal of this issue, we Gujaratis lose our moral ground for fight against corruption. We now have no right to complain about A. Raja or Chiddu or Sonia's poodle.

The argument is always lame - since politicians steal millions of rupees, what is wrong in us making thousands illegally? Gujarati's greed for money is not a new phenomenon. Sometimes I think that Idi Amin might had a valid reason in driving Gujarati's out of Uganda.

Meghal,

Nobody has clue about the dabba market size but it’s functioning on large scale and it is certainly something we are quite worried about – Ramesh Abhishek, Chairman, FMC

If we go by report than it look like Share of Gujarat is approximately 18-20 % of the total volume of DT. (NSE’s turnover data http://www.nseindia.com/content/fo/fo_busgrow2011-12.htm)

If we go by your analysis / conclusion / finding that “We Gujaratis ….” than those who are contributing 80% should also be ashamed of themselves as well. Why do you get to set the criteria for the rest?
Why all Gujarati should be ashamed of dabba trading. Those who are participating in it should be ashamed of, irrespective of caste, creed or religion. Not Every Guajarati is bapu and similarly all dabba traders are not Gujarati.

Everyone has right to complain about A. Raja or Chiddu or LIBOR Scandal. You cannot equate right of complaint of one person (X) based on action by another person (Y).

I am neither dabba trader nor advocating dabba trading. I am just commenting on generalization

SAME as Marathis are blamed for manuswaad, punjabis are blamed for low female/male ratio, pundits are blamed for superstition, gultis for gold, tamils for being hindi haters, biharis are blamed for what not , SAME way banias, marwaris and patels, gujratis are and will be blamed for their greed. if you are part of the community, suck it up !!

Culture is to generalization is to culture ! thats the reality !

Ok, lets resolve the riddle of Common sense :

Statement 1 :
I am Gujrati but I am not like other Gujratis. I am different. I am better than them, I own good part of them but no ills.

Statement 2 :
I am proud Gujrati and I embrace everything that comes with the package.

So what does your common sense chose to say? from your posts my common sense says you are all about Statement 1.

I appreciate your common sense. I think your “common sense” responses are getting too personal. I am not interested in responding to personal attack on public forums. It will not serve any purpose except post count and status change from Junior Desi to Desi to Senior desi.

Be aware though, that I will continue to challenge anyone on unsubstantiated generalizations that he / she make. Dabba trading and Guajarati is one of them.

I always prefer healthy discussion. I have my own view and you also have your opinion.

Cheers

hmmm... looks like I inadvertantly darted below the belt ! was not intentional though.

Since you will continue to challenge other's viewpoint but not open for criticism of your own.. I will not even mumble... you have a rocking day my friend :ylsuper: !
